Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellingtons Te Pou Haratūtanga - Institute of Criminology is currently recruiting for two fixed-term Pūkenga - Lecturers in Criminology for a term of one year starting around June 2026. This is an exciting opportunity for two emerging scholar-teachers to join Aotearoa New Zealands oldest and biggest Criminology programme. The programme has a strong focus on socially engaged research and innovative teaching. The roles will complement the current staffs expertise.

You will be expected to contribute to teaching on several undergraduate courses which are likely to include Introduction to Criminology Criminal Justice in Aotearoa New Zealand and Theoretical Criminology. Supervision of postgraduate research and some administrative duties in the programme and School may also be expected.

Te Pou Haratūtanga - Institute of Criminology has an outstanding record and reputation in its teaching public engagement and research. Our Programme has a strong collegial culture which actively supports junior academics. We embrace our location within Te Kura Mahinga Tangata - School of Social and Cultural Studies as well as the Universitys situation within the heart of Aotearoa New Zealands capital city with its extensive relationships with government and civil society representing both local and global horizons for teaching and research.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You will ideally have completed a PhD in Criminology or a cognate discipline although candidates with a completed Masters in this field will also be considered. You will have demonstrated excellence in teaching and a developing research profile.

You will thrive in this role because you have the capacity to build and maintain positive relationships with staff a passion for teaching and mentoring students at all levels of their university study and a commitment to the forms of academic administration that can enhance the effectiveness of the work that staff perform and the related outcomes.

Key requirements:

  • A PhD in Criminology or a related field is desirable although those with Masters will also be considered.

  • Evidence of successful teaching and course development in relevant subjects.

  • An existing record of published academic research and/or a developing research profile.

  • Experience incorporating Māori and Pasifika perspectives in course content and teaching practice.

  • The capacity to provide academic mentoring and related pastoral care to diverse cohorts of undergraduate and postgraduate students.

  • A commitment to building positive and supportive relationships with colleagues.
