When the Village Meditates envisions a world where Black and marginalized communities are healing thriving and leading lives rooted in stillness compassion and liberation.

Our long-term vision includes training and supporting a new generation of Black meditation and yoga teachers to carry this work forward expanding equitable access across Canada and beyond.

Our Mission: When The Village Meditates creates accessible culturally affirming spaces for Black and marginalized communities to engage in meditation yoga and collective dialogue. Through retreats classes and community partnerships we foster mental wellness embodied resilience and shared healing. We centre stillness compassion and connection as foundations for both personal transformation and collective liberation.

Our mission is to normalize mindfulness within Black communities reduce stigma around mental health and cultivate leadership rooted in inner clarity and communal care.

If so we invite you to apply to join the Board of Directors of When the Village Meditates.

We are looking to recruit new Board members to fulfill one of the following roles: President (1) Vice-President (1) Secretary (1) Treasurer (1) or Director at large (to learn more about what the different roles entails see below). We are especially interested in folks who align with our values and vision.

About the Commitment

  • Length of Involvement: A Board Member commits to serve a one-year term (for member at large position). Terms can be renewed at our annual AGM.

  • Time commitment: 5 - 10 hours per month to support committee work. Board meetings are held quarterly and virtually. Committee meetings frequency may vary depending on the committee.

This is a really great opportunity if you:

  • Have a passion for creating healing and care offerings for Black and marginalized communities in Montreal (and beyond)

  • Have the availability and ability to attend board meetings and engage in committee work (fundraising finance etc.)

Selection & Interview Process

Board Roles

President

Role Summary: Provides strategic leadership to the Board and ensures strong governance in alignment with our mission and vision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Chair board meetings and set meeting agendas in partnership with the Executive Director

  • Provide governance oversight and ensure board effectiveness

  • Support and evaluate the Executive Director

  • Serve as a key ambassador for the organization

  • Ensure the board fulfils its fiduciary and legal responsibilities


Vice President

Role Summary: Supports the President and steps in when required while contributing to governance leadership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act in place of the President when necessary

  • Support board development and succession planning

  • Assist with committee coordination and governance strengthening

  • Contribute to strategic discussions and decision-making


Treasurer

Role Summary: Provides financial oversight and ensures responsible stewardship of the organizations resources.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee financial reporting and present financial updates to the board

  • Support budgeting and financial planning processes

  • Ensure appropriate financial controls and risk management practices are in place

  • Liaise with external accountants/bookkeepers as needed

  • Support compliance with relevant nonprofit financial regulations


Secretary

Role Summary: Ensures strong governance documentation and organizational record-keeping.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Record and maintain accurate minutes of board meetings

  • Ensure proper documentation of board decisions and policies

  • Maintain official organizational records (bylaws governance documents etc.)

  • Support compliance with regulatory filing requirements

Director at large

Attend Board meetings and assigned committee meetings.

Support the execution of assigned committee workplan and activities.

Work with the rest of the board and staff team to set and assess the long term strategy and vision.
