Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) for the Writing Center in the Department of English (Fresno State Writing Center)

Position Overview:

The Writing Center in the Department of English is seeking Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) applicants.

Students from all graduate and undergraduate disciplines are encouraged to apply. The Instructional Student Assistant (ISA) is an entry-level professional development position where students learn to facilitate peers reading and writing processes as Writing Center tutors. Writing Center tutors support Fresno State students development as readers and writers with (1) semester-long small writing groups and (2) appointments for 30 minute or 1-hour one-on-one tutoring sessions. To support the reading and writing needs of students the tutors are required to attend two-day orientations at the beginning of the fall and one day orientations during the spring semesters. Additionally tutors will be required to attend a weekly professional development (paid) class for each semester of tutoring that supports tutors learning best writing center practices.

This position qualifies for work study via FAFSA application but applicants do not have to have work study to apply.

The department reserves the right to choose the most qualified candidate for each position and to assign Instructional Student Assistant to the courses that are appropriate for the department program and curriculum in any given semester. Due to staff and curriculum changes courses offered may vary and no guarantee of employment from semester to semester can be made.

Fall 2026: August 19 2026 - December 22 2026; August 17th 2026

Spring 2027: January 15 2027 - May 22 2027; January 13th 2027

Hours: 0-20 hours per week.

Job Dutiesmay include the following but will be dependent upon the needs of the Writing Center as well as upon the specific needs and guidance of the Writing Center Director and / or Writing Center Co-Assistant Directors. As a student-peer tutor

  • Facilitate small group(s) and / or one-on-one session(s)
  • Maintain clear records and attendance of all Writing Center student / client interactions
  • Assess writing needs of students/clients and give feedback on brainstorming writing drafts revising and editing understanding assignments making meaning through a reading managing the writing process cultivating response techniques.
  • Maintain best Writing Center pedagogical practices by actively seeking guidance from the Writing Center Director and / or Writing Center Co-Assistant Directors.
  • Attend the Writing Center orientations (fall and spring semesters) as well as enroll in attend and pass the weekly 1 unit (paid) practicum course (Thursdays 4:00-5:50pm).

Qualifications:

  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty staff and students from diverse ethnic cultural and socioeconomic background
  • Show serious and consistent commitment to the Writing Center.
  • Have completed First-Year writing course(s) (English 5B or 10) or equivalent coursework

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Completion of 60 units of undergraduate academic coursework
  • Desire to learn best practices of Writing Center Pedagogy and Administration.
