Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to serve as a Patient Safety Nurse within the Clinical Standards & Quality Team which provides clinical oversight of various programs within the Office of Health Care Quality. This position will be responsible for implementing the Maryland Hospital Patient Safety Program under COMAR 10.07.06 along with related patient safety activities in Maryland hospitals. This position will intake and classify reports of adverse events review submitted root cause analyses for compliance with COMAR 10.07.06 and provide feedback and follow-up to hospitals. This position will also manage a database of adverse events perform basic data analysis and monitor statewide trends. This position will be responsible for developing the annual Maryland Hospital Patient Safety Report as well as periodic Clinical Alerts on patient safety and other clinical topics of interest to the Office of Health Care Qualitys licensees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: A Masters degree in Nursing or a health-related field from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Five years of experiences as a Registered Nurse including one year of experience in an administrative supervisory consultative or teaching capacity.

1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelors degree in Nursing or health-related field from an accredited college or university and two years of experience as a Registered Nurse in an administrative supervisory consultative or teaching capacityfor the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate degree in Nursing from an accredited college or universityfor two years of the required experience.

may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military serviceexperience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in Nursing classification or Nursing specialty codes in the Nursing field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The desired candidate should possess the following:

1. Experience with adverse event reporting root cause analysis and corrective action planning.

2. Experience/knowledge of human factors just culture principles and high-reliability organization practices.

3. Familiarity with reporting definitions for adverse events in healthcare (e.g. The Joint Commission Sentinel Events and National Quality Forum Serious Reportable Events).

4. CPPS certification (Certified Professional in Patient Safety) or equivalent.

5. Strong skills in verbal/written communication and stakeholder engagement.

6. Experience incorporating new technologies into workflows.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

1. Candidates for positions in this classification must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the Maryland State Board of Nursing 4140 Patterson Avenue Baltimore Maryland 21215 or possess a current multi-state license in party states that candidates have declared as primary states of residence.

2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operators license valid in the State of Maryland.
