The Senior Engineer System Planning will apply advanced modelling expertise to deliver robust insight custom tools and clear publication quality insights for the NEM. About the division and role

AEMOs System Planning department is focused on efficient planning of the power system over the medium to long term to ensure system security and reliability requirements are met in the National Electricity Market (NEM). The System Planning division is responsible for AEMOs Integrated System Plan the 20-year blueprint guiding the future development of the east coasts power system as well as system security assessments such as the Transition Plan for System Security (TPSS) Report.

System Planning is also responsible for a range of other engineering assessments and market modelling responsibilities. The System Planning groups assessment can trigger major infrastructure investment and our advice supports effective decision-making by industry and government stakeholders. This is a critical function in AEMOs System Design division engineering a future power system that can securely and efficiently integrate large amounts of renewable energy resources.

As a Senior Engineer within System Planning you will provide expert engineering advice to assess power system capability and develop solutions that support the secure and reliable planning of electricity transmission networks across the National Electricity Market.

You will deliver high-quality power system review using specialised tools and techniques prepare complex technical advice and apply sound engineering fundamentals to navigate uncertainty in the energy transition. The role blends detailed technical evaluation with strategic engineering judgement often working with limited information or analysis time.

You will champion project teams provide peer review across major technical studies and coach and mentor engineers across the group. Working closely with internal and external stakeholders you will deliver clear evidence-based advice to influence change and inform critical investment decisions.

This role requires both technical depth and the ability to collaborate in a complex stakeholder environment ensuring high-quality timely outcomes that support AEMOs objectives and reputation.

What you will be doing

  • Deliver high-quality power system modelling and evaluation to support security reliability and future development of the electricity system providing robust recommendations on network adequacy and investment options.
  • Provide considered engineering advice to inform planning outcomes applying sound judgement to navigate uncertainty limited information and diverse stakeholder needs.
  • Assess future infrastructure and service requirements including network augmentation system strength inertia voltage control and integration of inverter-based and distributed energy resources.
  • Steer end-to-end project delivery methodology design technical insight quality assurance reporting and stakeholder engagement balancing data informed rigour with timely clear outcomes.
  • Develop constraint equations and other technical inputs to support market modelling of future system security reliability and development pathways in the National Electricity Market.
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining strong stakeholder relationships delivering clear written and verbal communication and coaching junior engineers through technical guidance and peer review.

What you will bring to the role

Education/Certificates

  1. Tertiary qualification in electrical engineering or a related discipline (e.g. engineering mathematics or physics) with demonstrated industry experience and a strong understanding of power system stability dynamics and assessment techniques.
  2. Accreditation as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or Registered Professional Engineer (RPEng) or demonstration of being on the path to registration.

Experience & Knowledge

  • Demonstrated experience modelling system-wide power system behaviour and interpreting complex technical analysis undertaken by others.
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles across transmission generation network constraints and electricity market operations including power system dynamics and stability assessment techniques.
  • Proficiency in power system simulation tools (e.g. PSSE PSCAD DIgSILENT PowerFactory Mudpack) and analytical software such as R and Matlab; experience with automation and programming (e.g. Python C VB) desirable.
  • Experience facilitating technical studies and work packages guiding junior engineers interpreting complex data and delivering high-quality technical reports.
  • Highly developed communication skills with the ability to negotiate influence and provide clear recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to navigate emerging system challenges within a regulatory and investment framework applying pragmatic fit-for-purpose solutions in a fast-paced and evolving energy environment.
