JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS
The Penn State Environmental Contaminants Analytical Laboratory (ECAL) is seeking a part-time Laboratory Technician/Analyst to support laboratory operations related to the analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in environmental matrices. The selected candidate will primarily assist with sample receipt preparation and extraction in support of federally and state-funded research and monitoring projects. This position is well suited for candidates seeking hands-on experience in analytical environmental chemistry including undergraduate or graduate students in chemistry environmental science engineering or related disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine sample preparation and extraction for PFAS and CEC analyses (e.g. SPE solvent extraction filtration subsampling).
- Assist with sample receipt labeling chain-of-custody tracking and documentation in accordance with laboratory SOPs and QA/QC requirements.
- Prepare reagents standards and extraction materials while minimizing PFAS contamination risk.
- Work with laboratory equipment to perform sample weighing grinding agitation extraction filtration and evaporation/concentration.
- Support laboratory quality assurance activities including preparation of blanks spikes and control samples.
- Accurately document laboratory activities in laboratory notebooks electronic logs and databases.
- Comply with all laboratory safety chemical hygiene and waste management protocols.
- Perform other laboratory support tasks as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in chemistry environmental science environmental engineering or a closely related field.
- Experience working in an academic laboratory is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow written SOPs and QA/QC protocols.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
Position Details
- Appointment: Part-time hourly
- Hours: Approximately 24 hours per week (flexible based on availability and laboratory needs)
- Location: On-site at Penn State University Park
