Springfield Public Schools seeks outstanding candidates for the part-time position of Education Assistant - Health Assistant at Mt. Vernon Elementary School. This position works 6.0 hours per day Monday- Friday 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
The Health Assistant supports student health by managing health records assisting with health screenings and providing basic medical care. This role may involve working across various school settings or in a health clinic including support for students with disabilities requiring extensive care.
Essential Functions
Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other related duties as assigned.
Primary Assignment Functions Health Aide
- Establish and update student health records including health cards illness allergy and immunization data using medical record systems. Review and verify accuracy of information provided by parents/guardians.
- Assist with health screening programs (e.g. dental vision blood pressure) and record results. Support nurses with administering treatment and re-testing.
- Consult with families on health issues such as head lice and provide necessary guidance and treatment.
- Provide basic emergency medical and first aid care when necessary; assist nurses with further care; contact parents of injured students; administer Epinephrine glucagon and other medications as trained.
- Provide 1:1 support for students needing academic social/emotional or medical assistance.
- Maintain inventory of medical supplies and equipment ensuring proper storage and organization.
- Maintain records of staff training needed to take students on off-campus trips. Assist staff in obtaining necessary training.
General Educational Assistant Functions
Student Supervision Support and Wellbeing
- Supervise students in a variety of settings to maintain safety and behavioral standards either in collaboration with or in the absence of other staff members.
- Guide train and assist students in addressing personal needs and achieving goals related to academics and behavior. This may include assisting students with special needs and/or adaptive equipment.
- Support social-emotional learning and encourage a culture of belonging in an inclusive school community by:
- Modeling and practicing empathy self-regulation and social skills with students to assist in their development of healthy interpersonal relationships; and
- Facilitating and teaching techniques such as de-escalation and conflict resolution.
- Evaluate student injuries and perform first aid when necessary.
Administrative Support Functions
- Monitor assess and record various student metrics related to attendance academics and behavior.
- Perform tasks related to data entry and reporting including the accounting of funds received.
- Attend in-service trainings and staff meetings as directed.
- Set up and take down materials supplies and furniture to support the behavioral and academic success of students.
Minimum Qualifications
Education/Experience
- Associates degree or higher (attach diploma); OR
- Completion of two years post-secondary study consisting of 72 credit hours 48 semester units (attach transcripts); OR
- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) AND
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal state or local academic assessment or para-professional certificate program knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing as appropriate reading/language arts writing and mathematics or reading readiness writing readiness and mathematics readiness.
Eventual Requirements of Incumbents
- CPR/First Aid card;
- Blood Borne Pathogen training
- Oregon Food Handlers card.
