JOB SUMMARY
Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) at the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility are responsible for providing medical and psychiatric nursing care to the youth/resident population. Assigned functions consist of but not limited to rendering first aid performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation as needed; administering medication (oral/injectables) while monitoring and reporting adverse reactions is another important aspect of care delivery. Also LPNs must demonstrate proficiency in practical youth care such as taking/recording vital signs (temperature blood pressure pulse and respiratory rate) and phlebotomy. LPNs primary function is to administer medications. While receiving guidance from the RN Charge Nurse or nursing administration LPNs are expected to perform procedures only as outlined within their scope of practice adherence to nursing code of ethics Nurse Practice Act Civil Service Rules and Wayne County policy and procedures is expected.
Required Tasks
- Conduct medical and observational rounds on youth/resident living units.
- Dispense Oral and injectable medications document procedure in youth/resident medical record
- Demonstrate knowledge in pharmacology mechanism of action indications dosage adverse reactions interactions and display/perform suitable nursing judgment; ensuring to report any youth/resident abnormalities to the appropriate discipline in a timely manner.
- Observe for signs symptoms and treatment of addiction (alcohol opiates etc.) prevent further adverse reactions by performing basic first aid emergency care and provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation when needed.
- Perform medical/surgical nursing skills (diabetics renal care cardiac care communicable diseases obstetrical nursing skills. etc.).
- Apply dressings obtain vital signs perform phlebotomies and decubitus care.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding youth/resident medical/psychiatric care adhering HIPAA guidelines.
- Perform procedures only as outlined within their scope of practice while adhering to nursing standards Nurse Practice Act Nursing Code of Ethics Civil Service Rules including union contract language.
- Assist with the orientation and training of new hires as requested by leadership.
- Complete other duties as assigned within the scope of practice.
Education/Experience Requirements- A graduate of an accredited school of nursing OR Nursing Diploma.
- Licensed by State of Michigan LARA- Nursing Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
- BLS/CPR Certification required.
- 1 year of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse
- Preferred: previous experience in corrections or behavioral health
Special Conditions: - Candidates must receive clearance from Child Welfare Licensing/Child Protective Services to work in a childcaring institution. Candidates that have lived outside of the State of Michigan must provide clearance from that State.
