Are you a skilled driver who enjoys working outdoors and contributing to the beauty of our city The City Operations department is looking for a Temporary Equipment Operator 2 to join our Parks & Urban Forestry this role you will be a vital link in our planting operations ensuring that trees from the Old Man Creek Nursery are delivered safely and efficiently to planting sites across Edmonton. You will work closely with dedicated teams to support the growth and health of our urban forest. Operating out of the Old Man Creek Nursery you will be responsible for the safe operation of heavy trucks and trailers (Class 3) to deliver up to 20 basket and burlap caliper trees daily during the planting season. You will verify load orders participate in the safe rigging of trees and navigate various city routes to reach planting teams. Beyond deliveries you will support nursery operations by operating equipment such as track loaders skid steers and tractors for tree care and site maintenance. This role requires a high degree of skill in following Urban Forestry Best Management Practices and adhering to strict safety regulations. You will act as a key collaborator with planting crews ensuring soil and trees are placed exactly where they are needed to ensure successful growth.

What will you do

  • Operate heavy duty trucks and trailers to deliver caliper trees from the Nursery to daily planting routes
  • Receive understand and verify load orders against trees and soil being loaded
  • Participate in the safe rigging and securement of trees on and off trailers
  • Operate and maintain specialized forestry equipment including skid steers loaders tractors and tandem trucks
  • Perform nursery-based tasks such as tree handling growing activities and general site maintenance
  • Maintain accurate paper and electronic records of work schedules completed tasks and safety observations
  • Collaborate daily with Nursery Workers and Planting Team Arborists to coordinate site-specific delivery details
  • Performing other related duties as required
  • Completion of the tenth (10th) school grade
  • One (1) year experience in forestry operations & snow and ice control
  • Two (2) years experience operating air-brake equipped trucks and associated trailers

Assets:

  • Formal training or certification in load securement and rigging practices
  • Experience with Urban Forestry Best Management Practices

Skills required for success:

  • Foundational knowledge of trees plants and plant material
  • Strong communication skills using mobile devices Google Chat and handheld radios
  • Ability to solve low-complexity logistical issues such as wayfinding and daily route disruptions
  • A commitment to safety including the ability to identify and escalate equipment defects or safety incidents

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 3 drivers licence (or provincial equivalent) with Air Brake Endorsement or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a Class D City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator and compliance with the City of Edmontons Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment including medical monitoring is a requirement of this position.
  • Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing steel-toe boots gloves goggles sunscreen and coveralls
  • Applicants may be tested
  • Possession of current Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certifications

Work Environment:

  • The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
  • Exposure to environmental conditions including extreme temperatures inclement weather dust noise light variation vibrations chemicals animals and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
  • This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing walking kneeling bending stooping crouching lifting items up to 100 pounds pushing pulling reaching using feet/hand control requiring physical stamina and resilience
