Job Summary

Position Overview:

The Alternative School Programs Coordinator is responsible for the strategic leadership administration and daily operations of the districts non-traditional educational pathways. This role serves as the primary bridge between the school district and external educational partners ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality supportive environment that leads to graduation and future success.

Position Criteria:

  • Valid Iowa Teaching License Professional School Counseling License or Professional Admin License required
  • 204 day contract like the HS Counselors (194 day 10 days)

Performance Criteria:

  • Deep knowledge of district and state graduation requirements as well as alternative pathways.
  • Coordinate the intake process for students transitioning into alternative settings
  • Conduct placement meetings with students counselors and administrators to determine the eligibility of students for alternative programming and to select a best-fit program based on academic social behavioral and emotional needs.
  • Ensure all enrollment documentation and state reporting requirements are met accurately and on time.
  • Cultivate and maintain robust partnerships with third-party educational providers local businesses and community organizations such as Metro West Learning Academy DMACC Youth Consortium Woodward Academy and others.
  • Represent WCSD on alternative school advisory boards.
  • Oversee contracts with external vendors to ensure service levels meet district standards.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the district and off-site program coordinators.
  • Provide professional learning for staff related to alternative education.
  • Attend and engage in administrative staff and student services meetings at the school building when appropriate.
  • Serve as the lead communicator for students and families providing clear guidance on program expectations schedules and student rights.
  • Facilitate regular meetings with students parents and guardians to engage in discussions regarding academic planning transitions long-term goals and post-secondary planning. May attend and assist with 504 and IEP meetings of identified students when appropriate.
  • Connect students enrolled in alternative programming who need or request support for mental health needs with resources.
  • Establish and report on key performance indicators including student outcomes such as completion rates attendance behavioral milestones and standardized assessment growth data across multiple platforms. Prepare and provide regular reports on program efficacy.
  • Use data-driven insights to recommend program improvements or the implementation of new alternative pathways.
  • Collaborate with building administrators on the development of summer credit recovery options.
  • Coordinate with the district registrar to enter student records for transcripts into the SIS and to run necessary reports for students in alternative programming.
  • Collaborate on the inclusion of alternative education in student handbooks.
  • Exhibit experience and knowledge of LMS SIS and data visualization tools.
  • Manage roster of students who are engaged in alternative programs and continue to support those students until they are fully transitioned to non-alternative programming.
  • Assist in the management student behavior when necessary.
  • Assist in the facilitation of alternative programming students in the administration of standardized assessments.
