POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Elementary School Counselor
FLSA: Exempt Professional
QUALIFICATIONS:
Texas Teachers Certification
Masters Degree or its equivalent in guidance counseling
Thorough understanding of school operations
Excellent organizational communication and interpersonal skills
Three years experience as a classroom teacher
Knowledge of counseling procedures student appraisal and career development
Ability to communicate effectively with students parents and community
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Plan and conduct structured group lessons to deliver districts guidance curriculum effectivelyin accordance with students developmental needs.
- Guide students and parents to plan monitor and manage the students own educational and career development.
Use accepted theories and effective techniques of developmental guidance to counsel individual students and parents to plan and manage students personal and social development.
Provide preventive remedial and crisis counseling as needed.
Coordinate school home and community resources and refer students parents and others to special programs and services as needed.
Consult parents teachers administrators and other relevant people to enhance their work with students.
Work with school and community personnel to bring together resources for students.
Present a positive role model for studentsthat supports the mission ofthe school district.
Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors and teachers.
Effectively communicate with colleagues students and parents.
- Respond to needs related to job responsibilities.
- Use an effective referral process to assist students and others to use special programs and services.
Interpret standardized test results and assessment data toguide students in individual goal setting and planning and communicate to parents.
Plan school guidance and counseling programs to ensurethey meet identified needs priorities and program objectives.
Plan implement evaluate and promote continuous improvement of a balanced comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program that includes guidance curriculum responsive services individual planning and system support components.
Demonstrate behavior that is professional ethical and responsible.
- Specify and monitor student goals for behavioral change when appropriate.
Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
Comply with policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rule and board policy in guidance and counseling areas district and compus routines and regulations.
- Participate in professional development to improve skills appropriate to job assignment.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
