Summary:
The School-Based Occupational Therapist provides high-quality evidence-based therapy services to students (PreK-12) to enhance their ability to function within the educational environment. This role focuses on identifying and removing barriers to learning participating in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans and collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure students achieve their full potential in the least restrictive environment.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct comprehensive evaluations including standardized testing clinical observations and review of medical records to determine eligibility for services under Virginia special education guidelines.
- Prepare clearly written comprehensive occupational therapy reports which address the referral issues and provide practical recommendations that can be realistically implemented by school personnel and used to assist in the development of the Individual Educational Plan (IEP)
- Actively participate in IEP/504 team meetings. Develop measurable goals and objectives that directly relate to the students ability to access the curriculum.
- Provide individual or group therapy sessions focusing on fine motor skills visual-motor integration sensory processing self-care and executive functioning.
- Partner with teachers parents and administrators to implement classroom accommodations environmental modifications and inclusive support strategies.
- Evaluate the need for and provide training on assistive devices from low-tech pencil grips to high-tech software and adaptive seating.
- Maintain rigorous records of student progress using district-mandated platforms. Ensure all billing (including Medicaid reimbursement if applicable) and reporting comply with Virginia state laws and IDEA regulations.
- Assist with the development and provision of in-service programs for instructional staff related to fine motor skills visual-motor integration sensory processing self-care and executive functioning.
- Attend professional workshops and conferences to refine skills and gain new competencies
- Keep abreast of the professional literature in order to remain current for ways in which services to students can be improved and make suggestions and recommendations
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Interpret to school division stakeholders the occupational therapy services of the school system
Skills Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong organizational skills; use of standard office machines; knowledge of the evaluation assessments and the procedures for administering scoring interpreting results; ability to manage complex projects with multiple components; ability to work with a diverse population in groups and in individual settings; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; knowledge of best practices in child development; knowledge of various disabilities or other programs requiring assessments to be able to interpret results to identification into the programs; knowledge of community resources for referrals beyond the scope of the school-based teams; ability to clearly explain the results of evaluations to parents committees and students (as appropriate); knowledge of and ability to gain rapport with students to facilitate sessions; ability to maintain confidentiality.
Education and/or Experience:
Masters or Doctoral degree in Occupational Therapy from an ACOTE-accredited program.
Holds or is eligible to hold a license to practice Occupational Therapy from the Virginia Board of Medicine. Current NBCOT (National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy) certification. Previous experience in a pediatric or school-based setting is preferred.
Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:
Typically work is performed in an office or classroom setting with occasional walking light lifting or other limited physical activities. Frequent operation of a vehicle and office equipment is required. Regular and frequent contacts at all levels of the division for the purpose of developing and achieving division goals and needs of students. Regular travel to school sites is required. Ability to perform physical tasks including lifting or repositioning students and moving therapeutic equipment.
Evaluation:
The Occupational Therapist is evaluated by the Director of Student Services.
Contract Length:
10 months/200 days. The contract may be extended to meet the needs of students.
