Ensworth School seeks an experienced student-centered College Counselor to join its Office of College Counseling and Academic Affairs. As a key member of a collaborative six-person team the College Counselor partners closely with students and families to guide them through a thoughtful individualized college search and application process.
Central to this position is building meaningful trusting relationships with students and families. The College Counselor helps students make intentional choices in academic planning extracurricular involvement and personal growth ensuring they take full advantage of the many opportunities available at Ensworth and beyond. Grounded in the belief that deep engagement in academics athletics service and extracurriculars leads to meaningful postsecondary paths and lifelong success the College Counselor plays a key role in preparing students for life after Ensworth.
This position also includes direct academic advising collaboration with faculty and administrators and ongoing engagement with college admission professionals. Summer work is expected in coordination with your caseload and the Dean. The College Counselor also supports related programming such as standardized testing coordination and admissions-focused workshops.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
General
- Abides by Ensworths Employee Handbook and Code of Conduct

- Adheres to the Essential Expectations of an Ensworth Faculty Staff or Administrator
Student Advising & Academic Planning
- Serves as the college counselor and academic advisor for an assigned caseload of students beginning in Grade 9.
- Guides students in developing and annually reviewing a thoughtful four-year academic plan aligned with their college or career goa
- Counsels students on course selection academic rigor Capstone proposals NCAA eligibility requirements performing and visual arts auditions/portfolio requirements and summer enrichment opportunities.
- Manages course selection and add/drop processes for Grades 912.
- Monitors and supports students academic progress in collaboration with school counseling the student life office division leadership and learning resources staff.
College Counseling & Application Support
- Guides students and families through all aspects of the college search and application process.
- Recommends colleges aligned with each students academic profile interests and family priorities.
- Counsels families through merit scholarship honors program financial aid athletic recruitment performing arts auditions and service academy application processes.
- Provides guidance and support throughout all aspects of the application process including application platform workshops; review and feedback on all application materials; writing a highly personalized counselor recommendation; and review of teacher recommendations.
- Serves as a student advocate throughout the admission process.
- Stays informed about evolving trends in college admission and communicate updates effectively to students and parents.
Program Development & Leadership
- Develops plans and implements advising programs and educational events for students and families in collaboration with the Office of College Counseling and Academic Affairs.
- Presents to students and parents at key junctures in the academic planning and college process.
- Assists in coordinating and hosting college representative visits.
- Meets regularly with the College Counseling and Academic Affairs team to provide updates on student progress.
- Builds and maintains professional relationships with college admission officers through visits fly-in programs webinars and ongoing research.
- Proctors standardized tests including the PSAT and AP exams.
- Performs additional duties as assigned by the Dean of College Counseling and Academic Affairs Head of High School or Head of School.
Qualifications/Experience:
- Bachelors degree required; Masters degree preferred.
- Minimum of three years of experience in selective college admissions (preferred) and/or college counseling.
- Strong understanding of the college admission landscape across institution types selectivity levels and international requirements.
- Excellent writing communication organizational and time-management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven environment.
- High ethical standards and commitment to student advocacy and student privacy.
- Sensitivity to and experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace (Gmail and Google Drive); experience with Scoir or similar college counseling platforms preferred.
- Strong public speaking listening and interpersonal skills.
- Continued Education Programs (as required by Grade Level and/or position) Periodically participate in different training sessions identified by you the employee and/or Divisional Leadership/Supervisor with the goal of keeping our teachers and staff up to date with current teaching methods practices and any new knowledge in their respective field. Dependent on the program such training may need to take place outside of normal working hours and/or in the summer months.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
- Regularly works in standard office or classroom conditions and climate occasionally works outdoors in varying weather conditions and climate
- Regularly uses close and distance vision Works at a computer screen for extended periods of time Ability to observe students from various distances
- Works at a desk for extended periods of time sometimes moves around campus
- Ability to occasionally move items 30 lbs. across the campus
- Frequently works in a stressful environment effectively dealing with a wide variety of challenges deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts
- Stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions
- Ability to regularly work flexible hours to support before and after-school or weekend events
- Ensworth requires employees to be physically present on campus with limited exceptions that are at the sole discretion of the School. Under extraordinary circumstances some or all of the workforce may be required to move to a remote working environment. Additionally certain individuals may also be approved for limited remote work based on the nature of the job description specific circumstances and only with written prior approval by a direct supervisor.
