It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention protection and preparation as well as the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration Health Services Rehabilitation & Reentry Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

Reporting to a Correctional Programs Supervisor at a minimum custody male correctional facility this position works in the Programs Department carrying a caseload of offenders. Other duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:

1. Providing supportive counseling conducting assessments developing case plans answering and following-up on offenders questions and concerns as well as making recommendations to the classifications committee.

2. Communicating effectively with other staff offenders and the general public and working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.

3. Performing crisis interventions to include suicide prevention.

4. Assisting in major dynamic programs or coordinate major or specialized programs for the rehabilitation of offenders such as offender work assignments work release education or recreation as well as transition planning and coordinating.

5. Preparing written reports with accurately reflect date reviewed by various sources reviewing analyzing and evaluating various documents and behavior data gathered form interviews written documentation and personal observation.

This is afull-time position(40 hours per week) withState Benefitswith established working hours and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

The salary grade for this position is NC07. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. About Wake Correctional Center:

Wake Correctional Center in Raleigh is a minimum-security prison for adult males. It is primarily a work unit in that 80 percent of the offenders leave the facility each day for incentive wage work assignments in various state agencies in the Wake County area. Offenders also work at other area adult correctional-facilities and Correction Enterprises operations. There are also offenders nearing their release date that participate on the work release program leaving the facility to work for businesses in the community. Incentive wage work assignments are also available at the prison in the food service clothes house janitorial landscaping maintenance canteen and recreation areas.

Wake Technical Community College works with the prison to provide full-time vocational classes in Certified Communications Heating/Air Conditioning and Electrical Wiring. Part-time classes in Blueprint Reading and Horticulture are also available. Educational classes in GED preparation college-level courses and college correspondence classes are available.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate degree in Criminal Justice Human Services Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; OR High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
