POSITION SUMMARY & PURPOSE
The Family Services Coordinator supports the needs of the homeless migrant and foster student population and ensures the delivery of mandated services to facilitate the students attendance and access to appropriate education. The Family Services Coordinator assesses students and families; interprets laws relating to homeless migrant and foster students; works as a team member to develop intervention strategies; provides case management; monitors student progress; and makes referrals. The Family Services Coordinator acts as a resource to school staff and conducts related training.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Family Services
- Provides support services that are designed to alleviate conditions that are impeding a students success in school
- Serves as a student advocate
- Promotes maximum development through utilization of all available resources whether they are based in the home the school or the community
- Develops connections with community businesses and organizations
- Maintains case history records and prepare reports
- Serves as liaisons between students homes schools family services child guidance clinics courts protective services doctors and other contacts to help children who face problems such as disabilities abuse or poverty
- Interviews clients individually in families or in groups assessing their situations capabilities and problems to determine what services are required to meet their needs
- Finds or arranges for support services such as child care homemaker service prenatal care substance abuse treatment job training counseling or parenting classes to prevent more serious problems from developing
- Refers clients to community resources for services such as job placement debt counseling legal aid housing medical treatment or financial assistance and provide concrete information such as where to go and how to apply
- Collects supplementary information needed to assist client such as employment records medical records or school reports
- Monitors school-wide attendance and initiates programs that will decrease absenteeism and tardiness
- Consults with parents teachers and other school personnel to determine causes of problems such as truancy and misbehavior and to implement solutions
- Designs and oversees opportunities for involving parents guardians and volunteers in the life of the school and establish a forum for publicizing ways that parents/volunteers can be involved in the school
Homelessness and McKinney Vento Coordinator
- Interprets laws relating to homeless students; and ensures the delivery of mandated services.
- Assesses students identified as homeless and makes visits to living areas/shelters to assess the family environment.
- Collaborates with school staff to develop interventions for students identified as homeless and develops individualized service plans.
- Implements case management services (including individual counseling); monitors student/family progress and status; and makes referrals to other professional staff members or community agencies as needed.
- Serves as a liaison between schools and such agencies/facilities as homeless shelters social services court services and the police department to coordinate assistance for homeless students.
- Provides families with information related to the needs of their child and acts as a resource to parents/guardians by providing family support activities and communicating available services.
- Acts as a resource to school-based administrators guidance counselors teachers and health services personnel regarding homeless students interpretation of homeless/school attendance policies and laws and record-keeping requirements.
- Conducts training to school staff on school laws as it relates to the homeless student population; and recommends strategies for supporting the needs of these students.
- Maintains necessary records ensuring confidentiality of students and their families and prepares related reports.
- Acts as a liaison authorized to affirm whether children and youth meet the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) definition of homelessness to qualify them for HUD homeless assistance programs.
- Refers homeless families and students to housing services in addition to other services.
- Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
Legal and Compliance
- Ensures that Brookside Charter complies with and meets all deadlines associated with state federal and sponsor reporting and statutory requirements.
- Develops and maintains a productive and positive relationship with Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education staff.
- Ensures the lawful use of all Brookside Charter funds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Certifications
- Requires a Bachelors Degree
Experience
- Related experience providing services for school-aged children preferred
Skills and Traits
- Proficiency in Google Workspace Microsoft Office or equivalent software
- Must possess a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of school law as it relates to homeless students; intervention strategies; and referral sources.
- Must possess excellent assessment case management interpersonal and communication skills.
- Must possess the ability to interpret homeless law; provide support activities for students and their families; and conduct training for staff.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students parents staff and outside agencies.
- Regular and dependable attendance
- Create within the school a climate of freedom to allow staff members and students to develop and perform to the extent of their capabilities.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- This position may require remaining stationary and/or moving for intermittent periods as well as moderate dexterity in operating standard office equipment (e.g. computer printer copier).
- This position requires individuals with a range of visual acuity as well as the ability to communicate with others.

- Implements case management services (including individual counseling); monitors student/family progress and status; and makes referrals to other professional staff members or community agencies as needed.
- Serves as a liaison between schools and such agencies/facilities as homeless shelters social services court services and the police department to coordinate assistance for homeless students.
