GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The Student Success Advisor supports student success retention and graduation by providing advising and personalized support to a caseload of assigned students. This position reports to the Director of Academic Advising & Student Success. This is a professional non-instructional advising position supporting the central advising office. Student Success Academic Advisors with appropriate educational background may teach first-year seminar courses. This position requires considerable contact with students and therefore requires extensive communication skills. Our low student-to-advisor ratios foster the development of a strong working relationship between students and their advisors. Student Success Academic Advisors are expected to possess extensive knowledge about academic programs policies procedures and student support services. They must be able to interpret student needs and provide individualized service and assistance while maintaining confidentiality.

Additionally this role assists with campus-wide retention initiatives such as the execution and follow up on progress reports and submitted alerts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Advise students (virtually and in-person) individually regarding academic core and/or department requirements appropriate class selection academic policies and procedures and campus resources.
  2. Establish rapport and maintain close contact with an assigned caseload of current students to support retention and student success.
  3. Identify and implement interventions if/when they encounter barriers to promote retention and timely degree completion.
  4. Create an open respectful and inclusive environment by utilizing an equity-minded student-centered practice that emphasizes mutual respect dignity self-awareness and authenticity.
  5. Empower students to be active responsible learners and assist them in making well-informed decisions.
  6. Support & facilitate administrative & outreach processes in support of student success & retention.
  7. Assist students in identifying long term goals and career plans both academically and personally. Guide students to meet graduation requirements in a timely fashion while preparing them to meet their individualized future goals.
  8. Advise students and assist in their exploration of academic programs while focusing on academic policies and procedures and available resources.
  9. Review advising procedures periodically in order to make recommendations for changes to enhance student service.
  10. Establish and maintain professional relationships with faculty to support student academic pathways.
  11. Reduce student stop-out gap by communicating with supervisor on barriers to student success.
  12. Maintain complete and comprehensive advising records in advising software.
  13. Utilize systems such as Slate to proactively connect students with campus resources.
  14. Serve as a member on appropriate departmental college and or/campus committees as assigned.
  15. Refer students to campus resources and conduct follow-up as needed.
  16. Maintain records of progress towards graduation using Colleague and Student Self-Service in collaboration with the Registrars office and departmental advisors.
  17. Maintain the confidentiality of student records and other information according to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations.
  18. Participate in Commencement Convocation registration orientation (first year and transfer) and other office-related activities.
  19. Provide advising for prospective transfer students regarding program requirements and graduation requirements.
  20. Maintain a safe and respectful environment by upholding institutional policies and promptly reporting any behavior or conditions that may constitute harassment discrimination Title IX violations power-based violence or other policy breaches.
  21. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.



Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge skill and/or ability required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelors degree required; Masters degree in Education Counseling or other related Social Science field strongly preferred
1 to 3 years of professional work experience in higher education environment
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite required
Proficiency with Colleague Student Self-Service and Slate preferred
Ability to learn new software as required
Strong written and verbal communication skills interpersonal skills and organizational skills
Creativity and comfort using technology to engage students.
Experience working with diverse populations
Demonstrates strong attention to detail ensuring accuracy
Effectively manages multiple priorities simultaneously
Applies strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address student concerns academic issues and operational challenges

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed primarily in a standard office setting with frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time viewing computer monitor or standing; may require adjustment of schedule to include some evening and/or weekends.
