A Brief Overview
Provides direct and observational care for the comfort safety and personal needs of pediatric patients under the direction and supervision of the RN. Performs indirect unit support needs related to supplies and equipment. Varied schedules to include weekend and holiday patterns.
Essential Functions
- Provides individualized age-specific patient/family care performing and/or assisting with care to keep the patient(s) safe as delegated by the RN. Adhering to hospital policies and procedures under the general supervision of a licensed nurse RN. Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate care for infant toddler preschool school age and adolescent patients. Utilizes patient/family input in delivering individualized patient care. Completes delegated tasks in an appropriate time frame based on patient needs such as vital signs intake/output height/weight/head circumference measurements ADLs preparing for patient arrival/discharge transports tests and assists RN/MD with procedures. Participates with the multidisciplinary team in providing feedback/input into the patient/family care needs. Sets and revises priorities based on patient care urgency patient/family/staff requests other department demands/schedules utilizing available resources as necessary. Assure the safety of the patient(s) from self and the environment. Provides for patient comfort dignity and satisfaction by actively participating in activities with patient(s) fostering an environment conducive to therapies and healing. Help prevent patient from pulling out catheters tubes and/or injuring themselves. Remains at the bedside of the patient to permit their constant visual observation. The patient is never left alone or allowed to go out of line of sight. Remain in the patients room unless they have been relieved by a nurse or another care provider who can provide uninterrupted observation. Performs reliable video monitoring in areas that video monitoring is available and/or performed. Engage the patient in distracting goal-oriented behaviors and tasks. Communicate on regular basis with the nursing staff as an active team member. Follows the patient care plan to meet patients visual auditory or language needs as well as any special considerations regarding diet allergy use of bed rails etc. Monitors patient(s) nutrition recording all caloric intake and output. Proactively utilizes de-escalation techniques to prevent harm. Immediately reports escalating behaviors to the nurse and security including attempts to leave or hurt self/others Accompany a nurse and patient to rest room. Assist nurse with de-escalation as directed. Observe and limit visitors in conjunction with the nurse caring for the patient. Assist with providing relief breaks for other attendants in the unit as directed. Assist with linen changes and room restocking. Assist the nurse with activities of daily living (ADLs) as long as it does not interfere with the visual observation of the patient. Maintain the privacy and security of all confidential information documenting complete and accurate information. Escalate clinical alarm alerts to licensed staff. Behavioral Health Techs may silence trouble-shoot or discontinue clinical alarms per providers/nursing orders. Responsible for observing communicating/interacting with confused violent combative or suicidal patients with the intent to prevent injury. Able to maintain calm demeanor and provide care with dignity and respect during stressful encounters. The focused observer is expected to verbally redirect the patient from engaging in at risk behaviors and to alert the nursing staff as patient care needs arise. Accompany patient off unit as needed. Maintains patients rights including the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.

Education Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED Required and
- Current and valid Nurse Aide registry in the state of NE or currently enrolled as a nursing student Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- Minimum of 18 years of age Required and
- Experience as a nursing assistant/psych tech and/or health care student or comparable work experience in a health care environment Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Excellent communication and behavioral management skills that promote safety and de-escalation.
- Knowledge and experience in basic computer skills preferred.
- Must be able to perform a variety of duties often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests demonstrating prioritization skills.
- Must have effective verbal written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Licenses and Certifications
- Current and valid Nurse Aide registry in the State of NE or IA depending on state of residence Required or
- Mental Health Technician certificate or
- LPN - Licensed Practical Nurse - State Licensure Required or
- EMT - Emergency Medical Tech Required and
- BCLS - Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association Required
- Conflict Management Training (red level zero escalation and de-escalation training) within 180 Days Required and
- Non-Violent and Violent Restraint Training within 180 Days Required
