What you will be doing:
This position serves as the Lead Lifeguard at a State-operated swimming pool and provides oversight of lifeguard monitoring activities in the absence of the Facility Manager or Assistant Manager. The incumbent functions as a working lifeguard responsible for maintaining order preventing accidents rescuing swimmers in distress and providing swimming instruction. Duties include assisting with staff scheduling assigning lifeguards to duty stations and providing guidance on pool procedures safety practices and operations. The role also involves monitoring lifeguard performance correcting improper practices and ensuring compliance with established safety standards. Additionally the Lead Lifeguard conducts routine inspections of the pool deck equipment and facility areas to identify hazards and notify management of maintenance or repair needs.

This position works in a busy State-operated aquatic center serving both high school students and members of the public in a team-oriented safety-focused environment. Lifeguards can expect an active role that requires constant vigilance strong communication and the ability to work in a warm humid setting while standing for extended periods and responding quickly to emergencies.


Who we are looking for:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

First Response: Knowledge of emergency management methods such as first aid rescue techniques and threat assessments.

Teaching Others: Helps others learn through formal or informal methods; identifies training needs; provides constructive feedback; coaches others on how to perform tasks; acts as a mentor.

Interpersonal Skills: Treats others with courtesy sensitivity and respect. Considers and responds appropriately to the needs and feelings of different people in different situations.

Special Notice:
First Aid Certification or willingness to become certified is required.
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification or willingness to become certified is required.
Certified as a Lifeguard or willingness to become certified is required.
The successful candidate must pass a comprehensive background investigation which includes a criminal history check.

Minimum Qualifications

At least 18 years of age at time of appointment;
AND
Current training and certification in First Aid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and as a Lifeguard;
AND
One year of experience ensuring the safe and effective patronage operations and delivery of programs to various user groups at a swimming pool facility or similar aquatic center. This experience may be met by service as a Lifeguard 1 with the State of Alaska or its equivalent with another employer.

Special Note:
Some positions may require the successful applicant to obtain and maintain any combination of Water Safety Instruction and/or Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification as appropriate. Continued employment is contingent upon obtaining necessary certification within twelve months of initial hire and throughout employment.

Some positions may require the successful applicant to pass a background investigation as a prerequisite to employment. These requirements will be indicated at the time of recruitment.
