THE DEPARTMENT:

As a department within the Division of Student Affairs University Housing Services (UHS) is responsible for delivering a comprehensive student housing experience which includes operations in residential life business operations facilities management conference services and information systems. The department has an annual operating budget of approximately $30 million makes $2 million in annual capital improvements and houses over 2800 students. The department has 50 full-time professional staff persons and is complemented by a student staff of approximately 150.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general direction performs skilled work in drywall patching painting and finishing.
  • Expectations require knowledge and methods materials tools and equipment used in the drywall patching painting trade including painting finishing drywall surface preparation mold mitigation and a thorough knowledge of applicable state codes and regulations including safety orders completion of work assignments and completion of time reporting.
  • Must be able to patch drywall tape mud and apply texture
  • Surface scraping sanding and filling in preparation for painting and refinishing
  • Applying undercoats primer and finish coats with brush or roller
  • Mixing and matching paints and finishes to finish.
  • Able to work off a ladder
  • Cleaning and maintaining brushes and other equipment
  • Painting simple signs
  • Advising in the selection ordering and storing of paint materials
  • Consulting with other trades and customers
  • Maintaining simple records and providing reports
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Driver License Valid and in State
  • These abilities normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painters apprenticeship program
  • Work requires thorough knowledge of the methods materials tools and equipment used in the painting trade including painting finishing drywall and paperhanging; and a thorough knowledge of the applicable state codes and regulations including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California.
  • Must be able to apply paints and finishes neatly and accurately; mix paints and finishes and match colors; erect and work from scaffolds rigging and ladders; select the most appropriate materials; read interpret and work from blueprints plans drawings and specifications; make rough sketches; estimate cost time and materials of painting work; maintain records and retrieve data using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems; prepare standard reports; provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants; analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations; read and write at a level appropriate to the position; and perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position. Incumbents may be required to possess a California Drivers License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to operate.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Knowledge of:
    • Methods materials tools and equipment used in the painting trade including painting drywall patching finishing
    • Applicable state codes and regulations including the Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety of the State of California
    • Computer maintenance management software Microsoft Word Excel and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Ability to:
    • Must be able to apply paints and finishes neatly and accurately
    • Mix paints and finishes and match colors;
    • Erect and work from ladders;
    • Select the most appropriate materials;
    • Read interpret and work from blueprints plans drawings and specifications;
    • Make rough sketches;
    • Estimate cost time and materials of painting work;
    • Maintain records and retrieve data using manual and/or computerized record-keeping systems;
    • Prepare standard reports;
    • Analyze and respond appropriately to emergency situations;
    • Read and write at a level appropriate to the position;
    • Perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position.
  • Experience: The knowledge and abilities required above normally would be acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard painters apprenticeship program.
  • License/Certificate: Incumbents may be required to possess a California Drivers License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment they are required to operate.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Must be able to lift lower push and pull loads ranging in weight from 5-60 lbs;
    • Must be able to carry loads ranging from 20-50 lbs. for distances up to 20 feet;
    • Must be capable of kneeling reaching overhead climbing stairs and ladders walking twisting stooping and bending; depending upon the project employee may spend 20-50% of day sitting 20-50% of day standing 20-50% of day walking.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the Teamsters bargaining unit 6. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum$5355 and maximum $7801 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.

University Driving Requirements

Positions that require driving for university business by using apersonal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Drivers license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points if their license is Class C or 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points if their license is Class A B or C with endorsements.
