Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N) an urban public research university and anchor institution located in Newark New Jersey a city of promise is seeking a Student Counselor reporting to the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs in the School of Criminal Justice the Academic Advisor/ Student Engagement Coordinator is a team member in a fast-paced deadline- driven customer service focused environment. The position focuses on: 1) recruitment activities including outreach and enrollment; 2) retention supports including academic advising early identification of and counseling for academic issues and career development; 3) supporting school-wide events and special programs; and 4) creating a welcoming environment for a wide array of stakeholders. This position is responsible for and not limited to the following: Developing and implementing a comprehensive recruitment plan especially for special student populations Establishing and maintaining productive contact with an assigned caseload (approximately 125 new freshmen and 150 transfer students from among the approximately 800 annual students) Counseling students on progress toward graduation and successful career and/or professional development Working with other unit staff on the coordination development and facilitation of initiatives targeting transfer students including but not limited to workshops transcript evaluations new student registration and outreach and recruiting events Updating and maintaining accurate detailed current complete relevant content for the Universitys degree audit program transfer services website and printed materials recruitment presentations etc. The incumbent is expected to assist with office events including but not limited to open house admitted student day commencement activities major/minor fairs as well as other events and duties as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
Requires a bachelors or equivalent experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of new and continuing student populations and programs and student development. Requires strong commitment to student support and success and a commitment to university and student service. Requires strong interpersonal skills and highly developed oral and written communication skills. The candidate must have expert electronic and digital skills including enthusiasm to function in a paperless environment. Requires superior social media skills and savvy. Requires the ability to exercise good judgment in prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines. The candidate must collaborate with all levels of employees within the organization and express a preference for working as part of a team. Requires adherence to established policies schedules and office procedures and demonstrated organizational ability with strong attention to detail. Required to work at occasional evening and/or weekend programs and activities.
