Job Summary:

In alignment with YCCBC values the Community Climate Action Mobilizer is responsible for performing day-to-day tasks across various community climate and environmental projects. The Mobilizers contribute to creating a safe inclusive and supportive work environment and work closely with the Co-Leads and cohort to achieve program objectives. This position will provide a variety of exciting opportunities to participate in community climate action related initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase community connections and resiliency. Activities may include ecological restoration and monitoring local food security wildfire risk reduction projects emergency preparedness community outreach education and engagement.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Participate in and actively engage with initial and ongoing training sessions led by YCCBC Co-Leads and project partners.

  • Work alongside team members and community partners to advance local climate initiatives and community priorities through diverse tasks and responsibilities.

  • Be open to learning new things trying new things and challenging yourself to grow.

  • Assist with coordinating and preparing worksite logistics.

  • Complete assigned tasks safely efficiently and with a focus on meeting project goals.

  • Support the program Co-Leads in collecting data and compiling information for project reports.

  • Contribute to building a team culture of safety inclusion and belonging.

  • Contribute to social media promotional events and activities.

  • Collaborate with the Co-Leads to identify and address challenges working toward effective solutions.

  • Respect and follow the processes outlined in the Collective Agreement and engage with union representatives as needed regarding workplace questions or concerns.

  • Positively represent YCCBC and its partner organizations when engaging with the community.

Working Conditions

  • Various job sites that will include working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and physical labour.

  • Occasional work from a home office

Qualifications:

No formal post-secondary education is required as we recognize that formal education at colleges and universities is just one version of many types of meaningful education.

  • Must be between 17 and 30 years old at the start of the position.

  • Reside in or near City of Courtenay or the Comox Valley region (relocation assistance is not provided).

  • Personal values and commitment to climate action social justice anti-racism anti-oppression diversity inclusion reconciliation and decolonization.

  • Flexibility to work varying hours including evenings and weekends to accommodate project schedules.

  • Legal authorization to work in Canada.

  • Criminal record check may be required.

  • Physical ability to perform tasks involving extended periods of standing walking moving supplies or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds and activities requiring bending or stooping.

Experience skills and attributes:

  • Reflective awareness of how personal lived experiences with systemic barriers or privileges shape unique contributions to social change.

  • Curiosity to explore many kinds of work that support community climate action.

  • Excellent communication skills and experience engaging with diverse community members in diverse settings..

  • Adaptable and adventurous mindset comfortable navigating ambiguity and change.

  • Proficiency in using G-Suite (Google Apps) Microsoft Office basic databases video conferencing tools social media platforms and other relevant applications.

  • Knowledge of or work experience in areas such as climate change anti-oppression work food security energy forestry and climate justice is an asset.

  • Standard First Aid certification or higher is an asset training may be provided.

  • Drivers license is an asset.
