***Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawaii may apply for Casual Hire positions which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits provided to regular Board of Regents (BOR) and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Duties:

  1. Serves as primary advisor for the UH Hilo student publications including Ke Kalahea (newspaper) Kanilehua (Literature & Art Magazine) Hohonu (Academic Journal)
  2. Serves as the primary resource regarding student publication functions including ethicsand various aspects related to newspaper and publication production.
  3. Provides support for the student newspaper members including advising and assistingstudents in meeting their responsibilities as stated in the Board of Student PublicationsCharter and By-Laws
  4. Advises newspaper management in developing and implementing responsible editorialpolicies and procedures to meet University requirements and professional standards.
  5. Assists the Editors-in-Chief to develop positive relationships with the Board of Student Publications (BOSP)
  6. Provides input to the BOSP on policies and procedures that govern the relationshipbetween the student newspaper and the BOSP.
  7. Establish and provides specific skills training i.e. news writing literary editing andlayout design for the student newspaper members as needed or requested.
  8. Educates the college and greater community regarding the constitutional right of thestudent newspaper to conduct free investigations into matters that affect their community and to print without fear of restraint or censorship.
  9. Builds and nurtures positive relationships with relevant academic programs particularlyJournalism and English to maximize students participation in publication activities andto promote students ability to integrate classroom learning with the publications.
  10. Maintains a current file reporting all required training activities.
  11. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Journalism English Communications or Public Relations and two (2) years of professional experience in collegiate student media oversight including advising student-led publications designing comprehensive training programs and drafting organizational policies and operating procedures; or equivalent education/training and experienceeducation and/or professional work experience that provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Functional knowledge of student newspaper management production and digital/print publication processes.
  3. Functional knowledge of principles and techniques used to advise collegiate media on technical skills terminology and industry technology.
  4. Functional knowledge of journalism and media ethics including the First Amendment and professional standards.
  5. Proficient in news writing copy editing and proofreading with strong skills in writing editing and proofreading techniques.
  6. Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex oral and written documentation into clear reports procedures and professional communications.
  7. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles theories federal and state laws and University rules regulations and systems associated with Chartered Student Organizations and student life programs.
  8. Practical knowledge of UH policies procedures regarding co-curricular services student-life activities and fiscal guidelines
  9. Functional knowledge of budget management and departmental fiscal oversight.
  10. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word-processing software.
  11. Demonstrated ability to identify problems analyze root causes and resolve issues common to student-led organizations and campus programs.
  12. Proven commitment to teamwork and the ability to establish professional relationships with students staff and external stakeholders.

Desirable Qualifications


  1. Five (5) years of related professional media experience.
