PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Provides direct reading instruction to students and serves as a reading/literacy resource.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possess or eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional license with an endorsement as a Reading Specialist.
  2. Has at least three years of successful full-time classroom teaching experience in which the teaching of reading was an important responsibility.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of reading and language arts instructional strategies and demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching and the learning process.
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of literacy development current theory and practices in reading and language arts instruction and various assessment strategies.
  5. Emotionally mature objective and sensitive to people and their concerns. Able to handle responsibility work independently and maintain collaborative working relationships with students families administration staff co-workers and community agencies.
  6. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  7. Experience working with diverse learning needs and with children that may benefit from alternative learning models is preferred.
  8. Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth dignity and individual differences of others.
  9. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
  10. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office Google Workspace and email.
  11. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students teachers administrators and the community.

  16. Effectively communicates with students parents and the community.
  17. Provides appropriate feedback to students
  18. Uses measures of student learning to improve instruction.
  19. Models professional moral and ethical standards and personal integrity.
  20. Participates in meaningful and continuous process of professional development.
  21. Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with peers staff parents and community resources to support the success of a diverse student population.
  22. Provides services to the profession the school division and the community.

  29. Provides direct reading instruction to students.
  30. Acts as a reading/literacy resource for all teachers.
  31. Assists in the coordination and modeling of the best practices for reading instruction.
  32. Promotes reading through a wide variety of programs and activities.
  33. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  34. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials supplies and skills up-to-date.
  35. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  36. Responds to telephone email and in-person requests inquiries and questions in a professional polite and responsive manner maintaining confidentiality when appropriate.
  37. Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  38. Complies with and supports school division policies regulations and procedures.
  39. Effectively performs other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students staff and community members. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
