The Lower School Math Specialist and Fifth Grade Math Teacher will be an important member of our student support services team at Gordon School as well as the fifth grade teaching their role as The Lower School Math Specialist the primary responsibility is to support students teachers and families in math instruction with a particular focus on students whose learning needs require accommodations interventions and/or enrichment. This position requires a deep knowledge and experience with elementary mathematics instruction. Working alongside families teachers and the academic leadership team the Lower School Math Specialist ensures that students have access to the resources they need to thrive at Gordon. This position reports to the Lower School Director and works in close partnership with the Middle School Director and other members of the learning support team at Gordon.A Day in the Life of the Lower School Math Specialist and Fifth Grade Math Teacher at Gordon School: Meet with the Lower School student support team to plan upcoming assessment cycle Co-teach a math lesson with a third grade teacher Teach a small group first grade math enrichment lesson Meet with the second grade teaching team to plan differentiated math groups Lead a professional development workshop for the Lower School faculty on best practices for differentiated instruction Read admissions files or serve on an admissions committee to offer counsel on a prospective students learning profile Co-facilitate a Neurodivergence Family Community meetingTeaching Responsibilities Teach and support Lower School students one-on-one in small groups or as a class group providing remediation and/or enrichment Model lessons and coach teachers on best practices for math instruction/differentiation Lead push-in support for fifth grade math as needed Assessments Conduct regular progress monitoring assessments Develop supplemental instructional material and math assessments for Lower School Use iReady benchmark assessments and progress monitoring data to determine and adjust the composition of math groups Collect document and analyze assessment data for students in first to fifth grades and share findings with division directors the Assistant Head of School for Teaching and Learning and the learning support teamProfessional Development Support for Teachers and Families Offer professional development to teachers through observation co-teaching and presentations Along with the Lower School Director and other learning support team members oversee Neurodivergence Family Network (parent affinity group) and lead presentations for families around math instruction and differentiation in partnership with Division Directors and the Assistant Head of School for Teaching and Learning Plan coordinate and present parent information workshops on math curriculum instruction and differentiation. (iReady presentations at Open House Visiting Days Overview Nights Ages and Stages Coffee in the Commons) Lead our coordination of Lower School math instruction in Lower SchoolCoordination with Teachers and External ProvidersTeachers Work with classroom teachers to provide push-in or pull-out support for math instruction differentiation Attend and co-facilitate parent meetings to share information on a students math progress and/or need for support Provide notes for homeroom teachers and/or parents on student progress for conferences nad/or attend parent conferencesExternal Providers Oversee tutors maintain a curated list of tutors and regularly communicate with tutors that work with our students and/or connect Gordon teachers with tutors that are working with their students Ensure that tutors understand Gordons culture when working with students teachers and familiesAdmissions Assist the admissions team with assessments for candidates Communicate with prospective families who may have questions about our lower school math program Participate in various admissions events ie. Open Houses middle school student assessments and expectations Report to the Lower School Director Promote student involvement and participation in all aspects of the program Engage in the schools formal teacher evaluation process and yearly goal-setting with the division director and the Assistant Head of School Engage in ongoing professional development especially related to growth as a multicultural practitioner and math instruction Attend and participate in team divisional and all-school meetings Engage in various student supervision duties as defined by the division director Personal qualities for the successful Lower School Math Specialist An enthusiastic commitment to Gordons multicultural curriculum and progressive pedagogical approach. High cultural competency and racial literacy and a demonstrated commitment to diversity equity inclusion and belonging. A genuine appreciation of and respect for children and an energy and enthusiasm for all aspects of school life. The ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues and the academic leadership team while advocating for the needs of students and their families. Warmth and a good sense of humor; patience and persistence; a sense of curiosity and a love of learning. The desire and ability to work collaboratively to innovate and to be part of a team. Deep appreciation for and the ability to speak passionately and knowledgeably about neurodiversity and differentiated qualifications Masters degree or higher in Special Education or relevant field. Demonstrated ability to teach math across Lower School grade levels. Ability to lead small group instruction and offer targeted interventions for math. Prior teaching experience and comfort with mathematics interventions and enrichment. Familiarity with the Math in Focus program preferred. Experience in partnering with teaching teams to deepen math instruction. Familiarity with neuropsychological examinations preferred. A deep understanding of progressive and antiracist pedagogy multicultural curriculum and the developmental needs of children. Effective timely and professional communication skills.
