About the project
We explore how posttranslational modifications (PTMs) reshape the structure function and aggregation of proteins central to neurodegenerative disease. Using cuttingedge protein semisynthesis techniques we create sitespecific modified proteins to uncover how these chemical changes drive disease pathology.
About the lab
The SWITCH Laboratory is one of the leading laboratories in human disease-related protein aggregation. It is an interdisciplinary workplace bringing together about 25 researchers from different backgrounds such as bioinformatics biophysics and cell biology. SWITCH has a unique platform of technologies for studying protein aggregation including biophysical ultrastructural and cell biological instrumentations. You can read more about us on our website and be sure to check out our laboratory section to explore the fantastic infrastructure that SWITCH has to offer!
The role
We are looking for a motivated technician to join our team. Key skills include experience in recombinant protein expression and/or peptide chemistry and a strong desire to progress innovative protein science.
Your responsibilities include the following tasks:
- Design/generation of expression plasmids
- Protein production and purification via FPLC subsequent quality checks and record keeping
- Solid phase peptide synthesis subsequent quality checks and record keeping
- Maintaining consumables stocks necessary for the above two activities
- Basic maintenance of peptide synthesizer LCMS and HPLC
- Biophysical analysis of proteins
- Documentation of experimental procedures and results in ELN
- Regular communication with supervising post doc
- General lab duties as part of lab technician team (eg preparation of communal buffers common equipment responsibility etc)
Your profile
- A Master in Biomedical or Chemical Sciences or similar by experience
- Extensive experience in recombinant protein expression particularly in bacterial systems.
- Experience in solid-phase peptide synthesis or organic chemistry is a strong plus
- Experience with biophysical protein characterization techniques is an advantage
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
We welcome candidates with strong expertise in recombinant protein expression or solidphase peptide synthesis/organic chemistry. Training will be provided to build competence in the complementary skill area.
Our offer
- A vibrant world-class research environment operating at an international level
- Access to the resources of two host institutions:
- VIB an excellence-based research institute
- KU Leuven one of Europes leading research universities
- State of the art research facilities.
- A dedicated training program to broaden your expertise and enhance your skillset.
- A competitive compensation package based on expertise and experience
At SWITCH we have particular attention for the career development goals of our people and actively support the ambitions of our lab members in the lab and beyond. Information on SWITCH Lab alumni can be found here.
Starting Date: as soon as possible
