Job Summary

Des Moines Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the 26-27 school year to serve as anIntro to AutomotiveTeacher at Central Campus. This position will start inAugust 2026.

TITLE: TCHRCentral CampusAutomotive Teacher

POSITION TYPE: TCHR

HIRING SPECIFICATIONS:

Required Education and Experience:

  1. Associates Degree or diploma in subject area

  2. ASE Certification or willingness to obtain

  3. Eligible for DMACC or Community College certification (Three or more years of non-teaching work

    experience in the career field)

  4. Eligible for Career and Technical Authorization teaching license.

  5. Strong curriculum knowledge

  6. Competency working in a culturally diverse environment or the willingness to acquire these skills

Industry professionals are encouraged to apply. A traditional teaching license is not required at time of hire if the candidate is willing to obtain the appropriate Iowa BOEE CTE authorization.

Under Iowa BOEE CTE Cluster Authorization guidelines candidates may qualify through:

  • Relevant industry experience inautomotiveor related field
  • Completion of required coursework in pedagogy
  • Background check and BOEE application process

The district will support qualified candidates through the licensure process.

Desired Education and Experience:

  1. Previous teaching or training experience.

  2. Industry experienceas automotive technician or related field

  • Ability to manage laboratory and applied learning environments safely.

  • Ability to build strong relationships with students and industry partners.

BASIC FUNCTION:

Responsible for planning and delivering high-quality educational programs preparing students for careers by

offering industry certifications college-level curriculum and partnerships with business and industry.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provide relevant career and technical program instruction to students including business and industry

    standards skill development knowledge and performance assessments employability equipment safety and

    work-based learning opportunities in the community.

  2. Collaborate with students families and staff to create a positive and safe learning environment.

  3. Use technology effectively for instruction and recordkeeping.

  4. Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with business industry and college partners related to the

    field.

  5. Design and deliver instruction to meet the standards and criteria of the State of Iowa Teaching Standards

    DMPS policies and procedures business and industry standards and college policies and procedures.

  6. Participate in professional learning communities and professional development.

  7. Manage program budgets.

ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position):

  1. Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  2. Maintain confidentiality.
  3. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public students and other employees.
  4. Assist with other duties as may be assigned.

RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM:Building Administrator(s) Directors of Elementary and Secondary Education Curriculum Coordinator

BARGAINING AGREEMENT:DMEA

FLSA STATUS:Exempt

FT/PT:Full Time (7.75 hour day)(Contract days vary by assignment)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Standing walking sitting bending/stooping reaching/pushing/pulling lifting carrying

WORKING CONDITIONS:Mostly indoors with some outdoor responsibilities during recess and arrival/dismissal
