Hawkesley (Voluntary Role)

An Independent Neighbourhood Chair is now being recruited to lead Hawkesleys new community-led boardas part of the Pride in Place Chair will work closely with residents the local MP and community organisations toensurethat local voices are heard and reflected in future investment and priorities.

This is a unique opportunity to provide strategic leadership to a long-term place-based initiative focused on strengthening communities and creating a thriving neighbourhood.

Each board will oversee community engagement shape a shared local vision and guide the future investment into each of the respective areas.

The recruitment process is being led by the local MP supported by Birmingham City Council.

The Role

The Independent Chair will act as atrusted impartial leader bringing together residents voluntary and community organisations businesses and public-sector partners around a shared vision for Hawkesley. The Chair will provide clear direction foster collaboration and ensure strong governance as the Neighbourhood Board is established and begins its work.

We are particularly keen to hear from individuals who live or work in Hawkesley or who have strong and credible local connections. Suitable candidates may include community leaders volunteers educators health professionals faith leaders local campaigners or passionate residents looking to improve their local area through partnership working.

Key Initial Responsibilities

  • Lead the creation and establishment of the Neighbourhood Board including its membership governance arrangements and approach to community engagement
  • Guide discussions on any proposed changes to the Pride in Place boundary or area name ensuring decisions reflect local identity and priorities
  • Work with the Neighbourhood Board to develop the areas first Pride in Place Plan setting out a clear vision and investment priorities for submission to Government in November 2025

  • A genuine commitment to the long-term success of Hawkesley

Time Commitment and Remuneration

This is avoluntary role similar in nature to that of a charity trustee or school governor. To ensure inclusivity a small allowancemaybe available for individuals who would otherwise be unable to undertake the role. Any allowance would be agreed with the lead local MP and Birmingham City Council and full details will be published online.

While the precise time commitment cannot be confirmed at this stage the role is significant. Aninitial commitment of approximately three hours per weekis expected which may evolve over time.

Support

The Chair will be supported by the lead local MP and Birmingham City Council acting as the initial accountable body including access to training and development. Additional support will be provided by Government to new Chairs across the region.

Code of conduct

The new Chair will be required to sign-up to a Code of Conduct and to declare any interestsbased on the Seven Principles of Public Life (the Nolan Principles).

The Seven Principles of Public Life -

As vested members of the community it is reasonable that the Chair will have interests that may indirectly benefit from the Boards work. This does not preclude individuals from becoming Chair but interests must be declared and Chairs should recuse themselves from relevant decisions.
