What youll be doing

As the Senior Counsel Privacy you will be responsible for advising on a wide range of privacy legal matters across the enterprise. Utilizing independent judgment good legal knowledge and a high level of professionalism you will proactively work with employees at all levels including executives to mitigate potential privacy legal risks. Youll be reporting to the Managing Counsel Privacy.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. Currently youll have flexibility within a hybrid arrangement spending 23 days per week on-site and the remainder working remotely. Please note that this arrangement is subject to change and the number of on-site days may increase.

How youll succeed

  • Legal Advice - Provide proactive responsive and innovative Canadian privacy legal advice on a wide range of issues related to privacy to mitigate potential privacy legal risks including those arising from new and emerging technologies new business initiatives transactions rights requests and privacy concerns. Where relevant advise on the intersection of privacy and AI human rights and employment matters.

  • Strategic Privacy Regulatory Analysis - Keep apprised of developments in Canadian privacy legislation and case law and work proactively to identify legal issues that may have significant organizational implications and prepare practical recommendations to assist CIBC in addressing the identified issues.

  • Relationship building - Collaborate with colleagues in the CIBC Legal Department to share legal knowledge and experience best practices and industry trends. Partner with functional groups such as the Privacy Office Communications Compliance and Risk in order to resolve legal and regulatory issues and provide subject matter expertise. Independently engage external legal counsel from approved counsel list and work closely with them to ensure efficiency cost-effectiveness and a solid work product.

Who you are

  • You can demonstrate experience in providing Canadian privacy legal advice on complex issues and mitigating legal and reputational risk including risks associated with new and emerging experience gained at a bank a similar large organization (including tech or fintech) or a top tier law firm will be an asset. Experience advising on AI human rights and employment matters is also valued.
