Master Thesis: Casting Simulation High-Temperature Materials and Material Simulation

The High-Temperature Materials and Simulation group supports a wide range of nickelbased superalloys used in the hotsection of aero engines. Due to the specific component and material characteristics many parts are manufactured using the investment casting process. Component geometry gating system design and process parameters have a significant influence on the quality and reproducibility of these components.
The objective of this thesis is to systematically investigate these influencing factors by means of casting simulations.

TASKS

• Conduct simulation studies to analyze the influence of casting parameters on casting quality
• Validate simulation results for predicting casting quality using experimental data
• Develop and implement automated data evaluation procedures for comprehensive casting quality assessment (using Python or similar tools)
• Develop and execute automated image analysis workflows (using Python or similar tools)
• Perform literature research

REQUIREMENTS

• Study in Materials Science or Foundry Engineering or acomparable course of study
• Strong foundational knowledge of the interactions between casting processes and microstructural development in nickelbased superalloys
• Excellent command of English
• Independent and responsible working style; strong presentation and communication skills; attention to detail and affinity for analytical work
