Job Summary:

Are you interested in gaining hands-on experience in environmental science The University of WisconsinParkside in partnership with the Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network is hiring paid interns to support environmental monitoring and restoration projects on and off campus. This role offers training in native habitat management plant identification and restoration ecology while contributing to the restoration of prairie savanna and wetland ecosystems.

Current students from any major including those graduating in December 2026 are encouraged to your cover letter please highlight any relevant experience academic background or personal interest in environmental science. If you are eligible for Federal Work Study the internship may be extended through the Fall 2026 semester.

Requirements: Successful candidates should have the ability to work with others have an interest in working in the field of natural resources as well as enthusiasm for environmental stewardship. Excellent communication skills and a positive attitude are important for working in adverse weather and dynamic conditions. The internship will include training on all job duties so prior experience is not required.

Job duties: Work includes plant propagation biological monitoring and general landscape/habitat restoration and maintenance activities particularly invasive species control. Use of hand tools power tools and herbicide required. Tasks involve outdoor work in multiple habitats and in all weather.

Duties could include but are not limited to the following:

Planting native species and removing invasive species in managed natural areas

Assist in maintenance and mapping activities for the Anna Marie Williams Nature Trail (no prior mapping experience is required).

Completing water and macroinvertebrate monitoring work in managed natural areas.

Collaborating with community partners like Root-Pike Watershed Initiative Network to enhance restoration efforts and engage in service projects that benefit both the campus and community.

Habitat and invertebrate surveys on UW-Parksides campus. Training will occur under the guidance of Dr. Jessica Orlofske. Interns will gain experience in environmental data collection and analysis including water chemistry testing as well as freshwater invertebrate sampling and identification. Sampling may require entering streams and rivers. Waders will be provided.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Interns are responsible for travel to campus housing and other living expenses. Work will occur on and off UW-Parksides main campus. Transportation for site visits off campus will be provided. Sturdy work boots gloves and field clothing are required. All tools will be provided. Selected applicants will be required to submit a driver authorization application with the university.

Required Qualifications:

Have a valid drivers license
Have completed the first year of college or have equivalent experience
Be able to help with heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs)
Ability and willingness to work in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

Be willing to work in all types of weather conditions
Passion for the outdoors
