Job Summary

We have an opening for a Technical Trainer in the Safety Education and Training this role in close collaboration with instructional designers and subject matter experts you will apply learning principles and instructional strategies to design and deliver impactful instructor-led training in support of Environmental Safety & Health (ES&H) programs with a primary emphasis on radiation protection training and qualification programs (e.g. Radiological Worker Radiological Control Technician (RCT) and related technical training including Health Physicist professional development support).  You will also ensure training programs meet applicable Department of Energy (DOE) directives standards and the Laboratorys requirements and effectively engage a diverse workforce across multiple generations. Training assignments may include support for DOE-regulated radiological training and qualification programs aligned with applicable requirements and guidance (e.g. DOE O 426.2A DOE-HDBK-1078 DOE-HDBK-1130 and DOE-HDBK-1122). This position is within the Environment Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization. 

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level. 

You will

  • Design develop deliver and present engaging instructor-led training using a variety of methods including classroom instruction computer-based training structured self-study activities and performance-based practical evaluations in support of radiological and other ES&H topics.
  • Apply adult learning principles instructional design best practices and the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) to develop and maintain effective training materials lesson plans and instructional content that support consistent delivery and positive learner performance outcomes.
  • Conduct periodic training needs analyses and help identify required knowledge skills and abilities to support development or revision of courses learning objectives and training outcomes with particular emphasis on radiation protection training and qualification needs.
  • Create revise and maintain course content and training assets (e.g. lesson materials scripts graphics assessments and supporting resources) to ensure accuracy relevance engagement and alignment with DOE requirements and Laboratory needs.
  • Develop and implement evaluation methods to assess learner performance and training effectiveness including participant feedback written assessments exam content practical demonstrations and other performance evaluations (e.g. OJT evaluations or oral boards) as applicable.
  • Gather analyze and use feedback and performance data to refine course content improve instructional delivery and support continuous improvement and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with instructional designers subject matter experts and directorate personnel to assess training needs develop and present proposed solutions and facilitate stakeholder review and concurrence.
  • Utilize instructional tools and technologies and assess related equipment/software needs enhance the learning experience maintain effective delivery approaches and recommend solutions based on required functionality and training needs.
  • Assist in programmatic assessments and audits to determine the compliance status and overall effectiveness of various ES&H training programs within the Safety Education & Training Office.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the TSS.3 level 

  • Lead development of advanced training programs strategies and methodologies to ensure alignment with DOE directives standards and Laboratory requirements and to improve program effectiveness and consistency.
  • Lead in-depth analyses of training effectiveness and program performance including evaluation trends regulatory changes and stakeholder feedback; recommend and implement improvements corrective actions and data collection strategies.
  • Lead programmatic assessments and audits to evaluate the compliance status and overall effectiveness of ES&H training programs within the Safety Education & Training Office.
  • Serve as a principal contact and subject matter resource for training initiatives representing the organization in internal and external engagements mentoring less experienced training staff and applying advanced technical/radiological knowledge to improve training methods and outcomes.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship. 
  • Bachelors degree in Engineering Health Physics Physical Science or other related technical field or equivalent combination of education and related technical experience.
  • Broad knowledge of radiological operations and monitoring concepts including the use of health and safety measurement and radiation monitoring equipment and familiarity with radiological work practices and technical training environments.
  • Ability to support radiological and ES&H training activities including coordinating with subject matter experts and technical personnel to develop update and improve training content instructional materials and delivery approaches.
  • Proficient knowledge of and experience applying the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) including training program design course development facilitation and evaluation/analysis of educational and training courses to support learner performance outcomes.
  • Ability to analyze course-level performance data and implement improvements within established program framework.
  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills including effective instruction in interactive classroom environments and the ability to communicate technical radiological and training information in a clear engaging and learner-centered manner.
  • Competent organizational and time-management skills including the ability to manage multiple tasks coordinate across stakeholders and prioritize work effectively in a dynamic environment with changing priorities.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills including technical writing communicating technical topics briefing leadership and stakeholders on projects and initiatives and collaborating effectively across all organizational levels.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level 

  • Significant experience with the design development implementation and continuous improvement of ES&H training programs including Radiation Protection in support of technical training needs regulatory requirements and program performance objectives.
  • Advanced ability to create engaging and effective training programs for diverse adult audiences through advanced proficiency in instructional design principles adult learning theory application and selection of appropriate delivery methods for technical content.
  • Advanced knowledge and application of instructional and curriculum design models such as ADDIE and/or the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) for instructor-led computer-based and web-based learning courses including lesson planning approaches that support consistent delivery and learner performance outcomes.
  • Advanced ability to develop training effectiveness data collection strategies analyze results and implement corrective actions to improve the effectiveness efficacy compliance and overall impact of evaluated training programs.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Masters degree in Health Physics or a closely related technical field and active professional qualifications with American Board of Health Physics (ABHP) certification and/or Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT) registration and an active DOE Q Clearance.
  • Advanced knowledge of DOE radiological protection training and qualification requirements including 10 CFR 835 DOE O 426.2A and applicable DOE handbooks (e.g. DOE-HDBK-1078 DOE-HDBK-1130 and DOE-HDBK-1122) with demonstrated ability to interpret and apply these requirements in radiological training program design delivery and qualification activities.
  • Extensive experience designing developing implementing and improving DOE-aligned radiological training and qualification programs (e.g. Institutional Radiological Worker Training RCT training programs and/or Health Physicist professional development programs) preferably within a National Laboratory or similarly regulated environment using the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT).
  • Operational experience as a Health Physicist or Radiological Control Technician (RCT) including radiological monitoring job hazard analyses (JHAs) and leadership mentoring or training of radiological personnel in a DOE-regulated or other high-consequence environment.
