About Harris County Juvenile Probation Department (HCJPD):

Harris County Juvenile Probation Department (HCJPD) is the third-largest juvenile justice agency in the country and the second-largest department in Harris County employing over 1200 professionals dedicated to youth justice transformation and reform. About the Residential Services:

The Residential Services Division consists of a Juvenile Detention Center and two post-adjudicated facilities. The facilities house youth who are awaiting court and youth who are placed into the departments custody by the juvenile courts. The facilities provide direct care and supervision for all youth placed with the department along with providing mental health and behavioral treatment programs.


Position Overview:
The Shift Supervisor manages the daily operations of the Harris County Juvenile Probation Departments Residential Facilities. The goal of the Shift Supervisor is to facilitate an environment that encourages and promotes positive change while providing a safe secure and therapeutic environment for the youth placed in the custody of the Harris County Juvenile Probation Department.


Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manages the daily operations of the facility. Directly supervises Unit Supervisors Youth Development Officers and Support Staff of the facility. Must ensure adequate staff coverage according to ratios mandated by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
  • Ensures departmental policies and procedures are adhered to by staff members while carrying out the daily program schedule. Addresses policy and procedure violations by coaching and training staff members to ensure compliance.
  • Reviews and generates documents which include but are not limited to incident reports logs payroll forms workers compensation forms etc. Must ensure that all documentation is submitted within allotted time frames.
  • Communicates with visitors families volunteers vendors and other agencies that conduct business within the facility.
  • Enters detailed documentation in the departmental electronic database.
  • Conducts internal investigations and reports findings to the Facility Administrator Assistant Facility Administrator and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent from an accredited educational institution.
  • Five (5) years of full-time paid experience in casework counseling community or group work in a social service community corrections or juvenile agency that deals with offenders or disadvantaged persons.
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience in a residential setting.
OR
  • Bachelors degree in Criminology Corrections Social Sciences or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years of full-time paid experience.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Must possess basic computer and writing skills.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures and TJJD Standards.
  • Ability to establish working relationships with the public and staff members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information.
  • Possess the ability to work positively effectively and constructively with high at- risk residents in situations involving considerable stress.
  • Must maintain professional behavior communicating and interacting appropriately with others at all times.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an active certification as a Juvenile Supervision Officer in accordance with TJJD requirements.
  • This position is considered light work. Must have the ability to lift and carry up to to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or a negligible amount of force consistently.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
Licensure:
  • Must possess a valid Texas Drivers License with appropriate liability auto insurance coverage.

Additional Requirements:
  • Upon receiving a conditional job offer all applicants must undergo a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • All applicants must provide evidence of a tuberculosis (TB) skin test. If the attest result is positive additional documentation will be required.
  • All employees are subject to random drug and alcohol testing as well as testing based on reasonable suspicion that the employee may be under the influence of a substance prohibited by the countys drug and alcohol policy during the course and scope of employment.
  • In the event of a public emergency declared by the county staff may be assigned to other duties facilities or departments under the supervision of another county department.
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years old.
  • Employees in this position must possess and maintain a valid Texas Drivers license and maintain liability insurance coverage at least equal to the minimum amounts required by law.
  • Certified copies of educational transcripts and/or college credits will be required during the hiring process.
  • This position involves working with challenging youth where the use of crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies may be necessary to ensure the safety of both youth and staff.

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Grant-funded Full-time This is considered an essential staff position.

  • Direct Care employees require and flexible schedule to provide coverage for programs.

    • May include evenings weekends and holidays.
    • Hours will be discussed during departmental interview.

Salary:

  • $80433.60 Annually

  • Depends on Qualifications

  • Based on 26 pay periods
