General Information:

The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) welcomes applicants for the position of Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor is tasked with providing quality academic advising designed to help students make informed decisions in pursuit of their academic and professional goals. The advisor regularly meets with students one-on-one and in group settings to discuss course selection develop individualized academic plans to ensure timely completion of graduation requirements and recommend success strategies. The advisor monitors student progression offers specific problem solving assists the academic unit(s) with enrollment management and communicates with various stakeholders. The position is a 12-month Administrative and Professional Faculty appointment beginning July 1 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Advise students about academic policies degree requirements and course selection.

Help students identify academic goals and develop academic plans.

Connect students to appropriate academic and non-academic resources.

Manage advising-specific administrative tasks and monitor progress of student caseload through accurate confidential records using JMU advising software CRM.

Collaborate with colleagues including academic unit head faculty and staff as needed.

Participate in recruitment orientation and programming efforts in consultation with departmental leadership.

Qualifications:

Required:

Bachelors degree.

Comfort with technology and learning multiple information systems.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (writing oral listening) and ability to relate meaningfully with undergraduates.

Strong attention to detail combined with appreciation for the big picture.

Ability to work independently collaboratively and under supervision.

Excellent skills in time management and organization.

Strong work ethic and critical-thinking problem-solving and judgement skills.

Ability to meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.

Demonstrated commitment to contributing to a supportive welcoming atmosphere.

Ability to process and maintain confidential information with professionalism.


Preferred:

Masters degree.

Academic advising and/or teaching experience in higher education.

Experience with learning interpreting and articulating complex academic requirements procedures and policies including FERPA.
