About us

SeaO2 is a Dutch Ocean Carbon Removal company committed to addressing climate change through removing CO2 from the atmosphere by harnessing the potential of the oceans.

SeaO2 is pioneering a transformative solution to address the critical challenge of achieving Net Zero by 2050 a goal to prevent global warming from exceeding 1.5ºC above pre-industrial levels. As the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) published on their 2018 report despite the aggressive pathways outlined for reducing emissions and decarbonizing industries a substantial residual emission of at least 10 Gigatons/yr remains from the hard-to-abate sectors which must be addressed through Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) often called Negative Emissions.

SeaO2s solution Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) relies solely on renewable electricity and seawater to extract CO2 from the surface of seawater and consequently from the atmosphere. The process uses electrochemistry and vacuum to shift the carbonate equilibrium of the existing dissolved carbon in water in order to enable extraction of gaseous CO2 which is then permanently stored in geological formations or utilised into products such as concrete or alternative fuels like green methanol.

Our R&D work

SeaO2 was founded in 2021 from research at TU Delft and Wetsus. At the moment we carry out R&D work at our laboratory at the Amsterdam Science Park and our pilot facility at the Dutch coastline in The Hague. The main focus of the R&D team is making sure that shifting the carbonate equilibrium and extracting the gaseous CO2 takes place as efficiently as possible. Therefore part of the R&D team works on the electrochemical production of acid and base through bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BPMED) while the other part works on the development of a next-generation degasser for the extraction of CO2.

About you

  • Minimum of bachelors degree in chemistry/chemical engineering/related field (BPMED team) or mechanical engineering/physics/related field (degasser team)

  • A passion for sustainability and research

  • Experience in electrochemistry (BPMED team) or fluid dynamics and vapor-liquid equilibria (degasser team)

  • Proven communication skills

  • English proficiency
