CONTEXT OF JOB:

Under general direction of the Director the Staff Physical Therapist is involved in direct patient care of patients in the University of Delaware Physical Therapy Clinic. The Staff Physical Therapist is an integral component of the physical therapy clinic and the physical therapy department.

The incumbent participates in direct patient care and supervises Doctor of Physical Therapy students during patient care. The position also includes a role in mentoring junior staff therapists in Residency and Fellowship training through guidance and consultation related to direct patient care. The Physical Therapist functions independently when given instruction of academic and clinical needs to be addressed.

The incumbent is expected to maintain communication with the department for administrative and research components as well as communication with faculty of other physical therapy institutions on issues of clinical education and specialty area development. This position includes an administrative component related to needed projects including protocol development and student interaction with the clinic environment. Incumbents are also expected to participate in departmental team and committee work.

This position may be filled at either the PT I or PT II level based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: (Applicable to Both Levels)

  • Participate in direct patient-care in the University of Delaware Physical Therapy Clinic. Evaluate and plan physical therapy programs for patients requiring physical therapy including evaluation of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular deficits and the administration of appropriate physical agents exercise and manual therapy techniques.
  • Provide clinical mentoring of Doctor of Physical Therapy students by directing students in the evaluation and treatment of patients and providing supervised learning and clinical application of physical therapy principles and procedures.
  • Mentor junior physical therapy staff members in Residency and Fellowship Programs by providing expertise and clinical direction related to diagnosis intervention and documentation.
  • Assist in the administration of project development and implementation particularly in areas of Residency and Fellowship development.
  • Communicate with other professionals in areas of clinical expertise education and professional mentoring. Interact with and educate other therapists in areas of clinical education and expertise at the local and/or national level.
  • Participate in scholarly activities such as protocol development and presentations of clinical research.
  • Contribute to the academic and research mission of the department through teaching in the academic program participation in clinical research endeavors and community education and service.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(Required for consideration at either level)

  • Entry level or transitional Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy
  • Eligibility for licensure in Delaware
  • Effective communication skills
  • Knowledge of basic computer software including document preparation and presentation software

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS BY LEVEL:

PT I (Grade 30E)

  • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical experience including clinical teaching
  • Residency training and two (2) years of clinical experience including clinical teaching preferred
  • Eligible for Board Certification by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in area of expertise; board certification preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred

PT II (Grade 31E)

  • Residency training and a minimum of two (2) years of clinical experience
  • Clinical teaching experience preferred
  • Eligible for Board Certification by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in area of expertise; board certification preferred
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience
  • Demonstrates an understanding and consideration of the differing needs and concerns of individuals with varying identities cultures and backgrounds
