Responsibility Level: The Manufacturing Engineer evaluates and recommends manufacturing processes and equipment to apply to new and existing products. The Manufacturing Engineer keeps up to date with the latest manufacturing techniques to assure safe and efficient processes.
This position is also responsible to:
- Determine process tooling and equipment requirements of manufactured products for efficient fabrication and assembly based on volume of production
- Determine the sequence of operations and assist with make buy or subcontract decisions for productions steps
- Specify manufacturing requirements for complete lines of machines equipment and tooling and recommend the purchase of new or specialized equipment necessary to meet requirements
- Establish manufacturing processes to assure quality parts in any technology utilized
- Evaluate new and existing products and recommend improvements to reduce cost or simplify manufacturing. Recommendations may include elimination or simplification of parts changes in design or materials to reduce tooling cost decrease machine time or decrease material processing time
- Examine new products for manufacturing purposes and develop cost estimates for efficient manufacture
- Complete CER (Capital Equipment Request) forms for analysis review and approval
- Consult with tooling designers and production supervisors on manufacturing tooling and processing equipment in order to specify what each operation is to accomplish
- Design manufacturing or process equipment and make layouts for drafters and designers in conjunction with tooling department
- Oversee placement of tooling on equipment and ensure that necessary corrections and adjustments are made prior to release to production in conjunction with production and tool room
- Keep abreast of changes within manufacturing technologies and apply experience and knowledge as required to reduce cost and increase operating efficiency. Must comprehend machine and process equipment operation and tool capabilities and be familiar with available technology
- Evaluate requests for changes in process compiling necessary data to justify or reject requested changes
- Investigate manufacturing problems to determine cause of defects or failures. Make recommendations to correct and resolve problems by suggesting design changes process or equipment changes and tool and die or jig and fixture modifications
- Attend engineering project meetings to maintain familiarity with development work on manufactured products and serve as the Engineering liaison for assigned facility
- Contact vendors to obtain technical information and assistance as required
- Assist in the establishment and revision of work standards for new and existing manufacturing operations. This includes the breakdown of the operation separating machine time from manual time and separating variable labor from constant labor
- Conduct time studies to help establish standard times. This includes leveling time values with consideration for operators skill effort and consistency as well as time allowances for material supply fatigue and delays
- The employee is also responsible for all other reasonable duties assigned by their supervisor
