Job Summary

Position Description




Under the general supervision of the Beach Lifeguard Coordinator the Beach Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of beachgoers by preventing accidents enforcing safety rules and responding to emergencies. This includes supervising swimming areas rescuing swimmers in distress providing first aid and CPR and communicating with beachgoers about potential hazards. The Beach Lifeguard is also responsible for educating the public about the beach water safety and other public safety matters while ensuring compliance with state and local laws including beach ordinances.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the swimming and beach areas during operation hours.

  • Scans the swimming and beach areas to make sure that patrons are safe.

  • Prevents accidents through the enforcement of policies rules and regulations related to beach use.

  • Remains alert to detect potentially hazardous conditions and patrons in distress.

  • Acts in emergencies to rescue and render appropriate first aid procedures to patrons as necessary.

  • Assists in performing administrative duties including daily records of patrons assisted patrons rescued first aid provided weather conditions and surf conditions.

  • Assists in maintaining the general appearance and cleanliness of the beach areas.

  • Responsible for courteously answering questions from beach patrons when possible without being distracted from lifeguard duties.

  • Enforces the rules consistently and fairly.

  • Participates in training as required.

  • Maintains and monitors assigned equipment and supplies.

  • Regular attendance on scheduled workdays is required.

Requirements

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.

Experience:
  • Requires a valid American Red Cross Open Water Lifeguard Training or equivalent lifeguard training and CPR/AED; must be obtained within 30 days of hire.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge and ability to evaluate water conditions at the beach/ocean to determine any potential dangers or hazards.

  • Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions.

  • Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their

  • capabilities and threats to their safety.

  • Knowledge of on-site protocols operational procedures and safety policies.

  • Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services.

  • Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information; includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors. Includes the giving of directions information and/or instructions to others.

  • Ability to tactfully and effectively interact with the public and with co-workers.

  • Ability to apply principles of emergency medicine and common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving variables in or from standardized situations; to make independent

  • judgments in the absence of a supervisor.

  • Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.
