About the Job

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities invites applications to fill one full-time position at the Teaching Assistant Professor level beginning Fall 2026. This is not a tenure-track position. The initial contract is expected to be for a period of three academic years (9 months each) with the possibility of renewals based on the departments future teaching needs annual performance reviews and availability of funding.

This is primarily a teaching position. Thus all candidates are expected to have a strong commitment to teaching. The selected hire will spend most of their effort on teaching and teaching-related duties with some obligations for service to the department college and the university. The department is looking for candidates with broad-based training so that they can teach a variety of courses at the undergraduate and MS levels in areas such as project management systems engineering engineering economics operations research data science and human factors.

Duties and responsibilities:

Teaching (80%)

  • Preparing materials and teaching courses in the undergraduate and MS programs in the department.

  • Providing opportunities for lifelong learning especially for alumni and industry practitioners by developing and teaching certificate programs and distance learning courses.

Service (20%)

  • Academic advising of undergraduate and MS students.

  • Helping with the solicitation procurement coordination and advising of undergraduate senior design projects and MS capstone projects.

  • Participating in efforts to expand the departments collaborations with industry and community outreach.

  • Serving on department- college- and university-level committees as needed.

Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • A PhD degree in Engineering Business Statistics Mathematics or other related discipline.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with a diverse body of students staff and faculty.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.

  • Work experience in industry.

About the Department

The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering is housed within the College of Science and Engineering which is a highly interdisciplinary college of engineering physical sciences and mathematics. The department offers undergraduate MS and PhD degrees. The department currently employs 18 faculty members (this includes 3 teaching faculty) who serve a population of over 200 undergraduate students 50 MS students and 30 PhD students. Teaching faculty members are fully engaged in departmental operations as detailed in the duties and responsibilities described above. Within the department research areas include optimization stochastics statistics machine learning artificial intelligence and analytics with applications to healthcare operations management supply chains transportation energy public resource allocation market design and manufacturing.
