Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent Summer Swim Program Supervisor or LEAD Lifeguard/Instructor the lifeguard/instructor is responsible for the instruction leadership supervision control and safety of all class participants in the LMUSD Summer Swim Program which consists of programs operated at the Arroyo Grande High School and Nipomo High School pools that will operate from April through August. The lifeguard/instructor is responsible for the appearance presentation and working order of all materials and equipment used for instruction. It is the lifeguard/instructors responsibility to observe and direct all class participants and to provide feedback and appropriate correction as instructed or included in the job description.

TITLE: SUMMER SWIM PROGRAM LIFEGUARD / INSTRUCTOR
SALARY RANGE: Minimum Wage
This is a short-term position which is outside the classified service per Education Code 45103(d)(2). Accordingly the position does not receive the statutory rights of classified employees and does not receive health benefits. The position reports to the Human Resources Department.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Current high school student with positive counselor/administrator recommendation or graduation from high school or its equivalent.
Experience: Prior experience in aquatics programs and aquatic facilities
Knowledge: Ability to make procedural decisions and judgments; read understand and follow oral and written instructions; organize and execute work efficiently; act calmly and sensibly in stressful situations; ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced environment and with frequent interruptions; establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication with staff students parents and others.
Certification: Current aquatic procedures including completion of an American Heart Association (or equivalent)
(Instructor Only): CPR first aid course.
Certification Current aquatic procedures including completion of an American Heart Association (or equivalent)
(Lifeguard): Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer First Aid Epi and Asthma Training Emergency Oxygen First Aid for Public Safety Personnel and Bloodborne Pathogens Training.
Personal Qualities: Resourceful innovative helpful diligent persistent and a willingness to work with children colleagues the community at large.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
GENERAL: Employee in this position must have the ability to:
- React to emergency situations by quick movements strenuous activity and on occasion assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights
- Remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting standing or walking for various lengths of time.
- Adhere to aquatic safety standards and guidelines
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL: Employee in this position must have the ability to:
- Stand and sit for extended periods of time; swim regardless of pool depth
- See and read printed matter with or without vision aids.
- Hear and understand speech at normal levels.
- Speak English so that others may understand at normal levels.
- Stand walk stoop twist bend over grasp reach overhead push pull and move lift and/or carry 100-150 (body weight) pounds to waist height.
- Move throughout the building and school grounds as necessary.
MENTAL: Employee in this position must have the ability to:
- Able to concentrate on a single task for up to two (2) hours at a time.
- Able to learn quickly and adapt to a variety of technology machinery instructions and task methods.
- Able to meet deadlines in terms of work assignment schedules.
- Is able to speak and write in a clear concise manner.
SOCIAL: Employee in this position must have the ability to:
- Interact daily in person with other members of the District and Summer Swim program staff and possess comfortable interpersonal skills and cooperative attitudes.
- Because of the nature of duties consistent attendance is required.
- Convey an understanding patient attitude toward other students parents staff and members of the community.
- Maintain the privacy of confidential information including class membership etc.

CANDIDATE SELECTION: The Candidate selected for this position will be required to present prior to the first date of employment: 1) A social security card; 2) proof of tuberculin test; 3) pass State and Federal fingerprint clearances; and 4) complete all pre-employment training including but not limited to Child Abuse Reporting and Sexual Harassment/Abusive Conduct.
