Job Duties

1. Arterial/Non-Arterial Safety Investigations

  • Conduct field investigations and data collection
  • Respond to citizen inquiries and prepare correspondences (verbal and/or written)
  • Develop and prepare Road Works Service Requests
  • Conduct safety studies traffic analysis and determine/design traffic safety countermeasures
  • Prepare plans work orders cost estimates and project management for traffic safety projects
  • Prepare grant applications and work with the Grants team to seek funding for traffic safety projects
  • Attend meetings (internal and external)

2. Non-Motorized Program
  • Respond to requests and questions related to non-motorized transportation needs
  • Provide design and design support as needed

3. High Crash Location (HCL) Program
  • Provides support and consultation related to the HCL Program

4. CIP Support
  • Provide review support and design services for Roads and other KC agencies related to traffic engineering and safety

5. Special Use Permits
  • Support Special Use Permit application review

6. Traffic Operations for Special Projects
  • Review permits and applications for work zone/road closures

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering (BSCE) or closely related field and four years (4) of related traffic experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates ones knowledge of engineering in traffic/transportation
  • Two (2) years of experience interpreting and applying the MUTCD FHWA and AASHTO Guidelines as well as understanding the differences between the various versions of each manual
  • Knowledge of traffic engineering and national traffic engineering standard practices
  • Knowledge of roadway network and how it functions
  • Familiarity with the design of roadway channelization and traffic calming techniques
  • Demonstrated understanding of traffic operations and traffic engineering
  • Demonstrated communication skills necessary to develop high-quality written verbal and graphical deliverables
  • Ability to efficiently work in traffic to field locate traffic control devices including signs barriers object markers etc.
  • Ability to effectively be part of a team that contributes to a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued
  • Ability to demonstrate behaviors that include fairness respect and inclusiveness
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities under close deadlines and changing priorities
  • Predictable and reliable attendance


Necessary Requirements:

  • Valid Washington state drivers license at the time of hire
  • Skilled in the use of Word Excel PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of MUTCD FHWA and AASHTO Guidelines

Desirable:

  • WA State Professional Engineer License (PE)
  • Knowledge and experience using Civil3D

INTERVIEW SCHEDULE:The first round of interviews for this position is scheduled to take place the week of March 16 2026.

WORK SCHEDULE:The typical work schedule for this position is 8:00 am 5:00 pm Monday Friday with occasional night and weekend work. This position is non-exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standard Act and is eligible for overtime pay with prior supervisor approval.

EMERGENCY DESIGNATION STATUS:This position has been designated as: Non-Mission Critical - Employees who staff county functions or services that may be delayed suspended or diverted in an emergency while essential functions are prioritized Mission Critical. Unless otherwise directed by the County Executive department director or agency head all employees regardless of designation are expected to report to work or request leave during an emergency or inclement weather.

TELEWORKING REQUIREMENT:We will work in the office at least three days a week to foster connection and responsiveness arrive prepared and on time and structure meetings with clear goals and next steps.The work associated with this position will be performed by teleworking field work onsite work and meetings as needed. The employee will report to work at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson Seattle WA 98104). Employees must reside in Washington State and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
