Financial Specialist I

Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Manager the Financial Specialist I or II will be part of the administration team within the Department of Oncology/McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research. The role will provide high customer service to faculty staff and students on a variety of departmental financial transactions. This position will review and submit requests with funding allocation purchasing accounts payable and travel related items maintain financial reports and records and support the administrative team.

  • This position is full or part-time 60%-100%

  • This position requires work to be completed onsite at a designated campus work location.

  • The work schedule is flexible and will be determined at the time of hire.

  • Applicants for this position will be considered for the following titles: Financial Specialist I Financial Specialist II. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist.

  • Candidates who demonstrate the following knowledge skills and abilities will be given first consideration: Ability to work independently on resolving matters timely effectively communicate and develop positive working relationships with others.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Audits or processes transactions and assigns funding codes in accordance with established rules regulations and policies
  • Audits or reconciles original purchase documents with payments
  • Serve as a back up to other Administrative Office personnel as needed

  • Drafts basic communications and reports and maintains organization of varied records to provide administrative support within a specified work unit
  • Answers general fiscal questions and provides information based on set materials and standards to various audiences
  • Audits monitors organizes and updates fiscal records reports and affiliated materials

Department:

School of Medicine and Public Health Department of Oncology Administration

The McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research is also designated as the Department of Oncology within the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. Our administrative team actively supports departmental research and their pursuit of understanding cancer.

The central mission of the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research is twofold:


1. To pursue outstanding research programs directed toward understanding the causes and biology of cancer and the factors that regulate normal and neoplastic growth and differentiation.

2. To provide training of the highest quality in basic cancer research at the graduate and postdoctoral levels.


While these two goals represent the cornerstone of our activities we also seek to provide undergraduates and medical students with a foundation in basic cancer biology and to serve the public and scientific community through our activities for national and international organizations. Compensation:

The starting hourly wage for the position is $22.00 per hour; but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least one year experience in Accounting Finance or other related business area

  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 particularly in Outlook Word and Excel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in data retrieval and generating reports

  • Experience in process improvement

  • Experience working in Workday or similar ERP systems on accounting cost allocation and payment processes

  • Administrative experience/knowledge of the biological sciences field

Education:

H.S. Diploma Preferred Minimum
