Job Summary:
The Senior Director Insurance will lead the companys insurance strategy ensuring comprehensive risk management and optimal insurance coverage. This role involves collaborating with various departments to identify and mitigate risks managing relationships with insurance providers and overseeing the Avangrid Corporate claims processes. The Senior Director Insurance is responsible for the implementation and management of all local Insurance and Risk Financing Programs within Avangrid; and working with the Global Iberdrola Risk and Insurance Team to ensure (where possible) integration of Insurance Programs in compliance with U.S. Federal State and Local statutes including all applicable rules and/or regulations.
Position will also be responsible for the planning procurement negotiation and implementation of all casualty insurance surety bonding and property insurance programs (including construction/capital project related insurance programs). The Senior Director Insurance will also direct the management of all Excess Insurance Claims involving personal injury property damage employment practices liability or other claims brought against the company or its operating companies in the US. Other responsibilities include: manage and plan all Property Casualty Insurance Budgets maintain self-insurance or self-funding programs for risks that are retained by the Company to assure that third-party liabilities are recognized and funded.
Reporting to the SVP Purchasing & Services this position is responsible for interfacing with the Executive team to develop and execute the strategic vision for the organizations Insurance functions. Oversight and management of all insurance related budgets internal controls claims and financial reporting thereof and Risk and Insurance Management software applications (and records). In addition responsibilities include oversight development and execution of Insurance strategies across all categories within span of control including targets timelines and resource plans. Coordinate with all Operating Companies to ensure alignment with overall business strategy.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop and implement a local insurance strategy aligned with the companys risk management framework and global insurance framework.
Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify potential exposures and recommend appropriate insurance solutions.
Guide and assist senior management and global insurance team in the development and communication of risk financing policies and standards.
Oversee the procurement renewal and management of all insurance policies ensuring they meet the companys needs and regulatory requirements.
Oversee the preparation and submittal of all Insurance Procurement market submittals including Applications for Insurance related presentations and response to Market Data Requests for both operational Insurance and individual capital project insurance programs.
Ensures departmental compliance with contractual lending regulatory and corporate requirements guidelines and goals including turnaround times and reporting.
Support the Business on Insurance needs and collaborate with both internal and external legal counsel
Monitor and control insurance-related budgets and expenditure across Avangrid and for individual CAPEX projects.
Develop and maintain a high-performance culture resulting in continued success meeting KPIs and improved levels of customer service to internal and external customers.
Support Networks Rate Case(s) by providing responses to RFIs and representing OpCos at regulatory hearings.
Set goals manage evaluate and develop team. Challenge employees build effective teams provide staff with coaching feedback and development opportunities.
Develop and deliver presentations on the opportunities best practices and issues for alignment and drive implementation of Insurance and Risk Management initiatives.
Assess the Insurance market and explore opportunities to develop coverage solutions for newly emerging insurable risks (e.g. Wildfire NAT/CAT events etc.).
Lead the Corporate claims management process including negotiation and settlement of large insured losses to ensure timely and optimal resolutions while managing recoveries and cashflow.
Manage relationships with insurance brokers carriers and other third-party service providers; ability to lead in-person meetings and effectively communicate corporate strategies initiatives and undertakings.
Lead and mentor a team of insurance professionals fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
Required Qualifications:
Education & Experience Required:
Bachelors Degree required in Business Administration or related discipline.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in Insurance Property Casualty Claims Insurance Procurement Risk Financing or related disciplines. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Demonstrated knowledge of corporate-wide business processes and operations; knowledge of operational risks and exposures.
Demonstrated knowledge of Corporate Strategies for Managing and Financing Risk.
Leader with strong organizational and interpersonal skills in a managerial role.
Extensive experience with Insurance Markets Insurance Brokerage and Risk Financing Markets as well as knowledge and experience with negotiation and insurance contract interpretation.
Experience in Property & Casualty Directors and Officers Liability and other related Insurance programs.
Knowledge of Actuarial Principles and Actuarial Report Interpretation.
Skills/Abilities:
Strong oral written and presentation related communication skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Extensive experience and knowledge of the Legal System Claims Management Litigation and related compliance.
Strong Customer Service Orientation ability to oversee the education of business units and corporate and shared services personnel on the Companys risk financing policies and procedures and associated roles and responsibilities with the principles and techniques of risk management.
Must have a clear commercial focus with particular emphasis on insurance concepts and principles contracts contract terms and conditions contract writing negotiation of contract terms and conditions knowledge of written legal concepts and principles.
Ability to handle priorities manage multiple projects set priorities meet deadlines is a must.
Proven leadership and team management capabilities.
In-depth knowledge of global insurance markets and regulatory environments.
Microsoft Office Suites computer skills Knowledge of and familiarity with Risk Management Information Software Systems.
Knowledge of risk management practices.
Experience and knowledge associated with the Law of Torts (emphasis on negligence).
Experience with Budget preparation and administration.
Knowledge and experience with functional accounting practices and procedures.
Knowledge and experience reading interpreting and analyzing contract terms and conditions.
Understanding of Insurance Utility and Energy regulatory process at the local State and Federal levels.
Agility ability to change and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to write clear accurate and wellstructured technical documents and to communicate in a legally competent manner.
Preferred Qualifications:
Candidate should have an advanced degree (Masters) in Business Finance or completed Insurance Institute of America Designation in Risk Management (or demonstrate successful completion of related Insurance Professional designations).
Experience within the regulated electric/gas utility industry including an understanding of regulatory accounting principles.
