Why your role matters
The Indigenous Student and Community Liaison Officer plays a key role in strengthening engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and other underrepresented groups to support student participation retention and success at the Liverpool Study Hub.

The position focuses on building strong community partnerships and supporting outreach and engagement initiatives while fostering a safe and inclusive Hub environment through collaboration reporting and culturally responsive practices. The role also contributes to the development and implementation of the Hubs engagement strategy including the creation and coordination of newsletters social media content and other internal and external communications.

The role reports to the Hub Manager and does not have direct reports.

Specific accountabilities include:

  • Identify opportunities for Indigenous student access participation and progression and assist with the development and implementation of culturally empowering strategies programs and services to improve student retention and success.
  • Provide pastoral and cultural care and resources to Indigenous students to ensure a positive and successful student experience.
  • Work in partnership with the indigenous community and land councils in Liverpool and surrounding areas.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of a Hub engagement strategy. This includes newsletters social media and other internal and external communications.
  • Identify opportunities to address systemic or other challenges that may impact the access participation and success of Indigenous students or other underrepresented student groups.

About You

  • This position is open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants only. UNSW has obtained an exemption under section 126 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW) to designate and recruit professional and academic positions for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons only to fulfil UNSWs goal of a representative workforce rate. Evidence of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status will be required tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education training and lived experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in building and managing relationships with Indigenous communities education providers and external stakeholders to achieve positive student outcomes.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage confidently across diverse audiences including public speaking social media and media engagement.
  • Proven ability to identify and respond to challenges impacting Indigenous student participation and progression using culturally responsive approaches and lived experience.
  • Experience in developing and implementing outreach strategies programs and services that promote inclusion retention and success for underrepresented student groups.
  • Capacity to contribute to engagement strategy development including reporting on activities and adapting communications for varied audiences.
  • Sound judgement and problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex student needs and community dynamics with empathy and professionalism.
  • Understanding of referral pathways and case coordination including collaboration with internal services and external agencies to support student wellbeing.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development including participation in supervision and team learning to build cultural capability and resilience.

This role requires the successful candidate to hold a valid paid Working with Childrens Check.
