Position Overview
Dedham Public Schools is seeking three Dance Instructors in Global Dance to launch an innovative pilot program at the middle school level (11-14 year old students). We are looking for professional energetic and culturally-grounded instructors specializing in one or more diverse dance forms (e.g. Afro-Caribbean Bharatanatyam Irish Step Hip-Hop Latin Social Dance etc.).
The goal of this initiative is to expand student perspectives through movement fostering both physical literacy and global awareness. As a key contributor to this pilot you will help shape the future of dance education within our district.
Key Responsibilities
- Instruction: Lead 56 dynamic dance sessions per day within the Physical Education department.
- Collaboration: Work alongside 12 PE staff members who will assist with classroom management and student engagement.
- Cultural Context: Provide brief introductory context for the dance forms being taught (history origin or cultural significance).
- Engagement: Motivate middle school students of all skill levels to participate and explore new ways of moving.
Shift Details & Logistics
- Hours: 8:15 am 2:35 pm (Includes a dedicated lunch break from 11:38 am 12:59 pm).
- Commitment: 2 days total. We prefer two consecutive days to ensure all students have an opportunity to participate.
- Environment: A supportive co-taught setting within the Dedham Middle School gymnasium or athletic facilities. You will be supported by one or two PE teachers who are familiar with the students.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated expertise in a specific cultural dance form or a range of diverse styles.
- Prior experience teaching or performing for adolescent audiences (middle school age) preferred.
- Strong communication skills and a high level of reliability.
- A passion for inclusivity and cultural representation in the arts.
