Job Summary

A large and well-regarded secondary school in Birmingham is seeking a proactive and compassionate Attendance & Education Welfare Officer to join its pastoral and safeguarding team. This is a pivotal role within an inclusive 1116 setting serving a diverse urban community where strong attendance systems underpin academic progress and student wellbeing.

The school has made significant strides in raising standards and improving behaviour over recent years with attendance identified as a key strategic priority. You will play a central role in continuing that positive trajectory.

The Role
As Attendance & Education Welfare Officer you will take responsibility for monitoring analysing and improving student attendance across the school. Working closely with Heads of Year safeguarding leads and senior leadership you will identify patterns of absence coordinate interventions and build constructive relationships with families.

Your core responsibilities will include:
Daily monitoring of attendance data using the schools MIS system
Conducting first-day absence calls and follow-up communications
Organising and leading attendance meetings with parents and carers
Liaising with external agencies where appropriate
Coordinating home visits when necessary
Maintaining accurate records to support safeguarding and statutory reporting
Contributing to attendance panels and local authority processes

You will also play a preventative role helping to promote a culture of high expectations and regular attendance across the school community.

About You
Experience in attendance welfare safeguarding or pastoral roles (school experience preferred)
Strong understanding of attendance legislation and local authority procedures
Confident communicator able to build positive relationships with families
Highly organised with strong data-handling skills
Resilient and solution-focused approach

Experience conducting home visits and working with external agencies would be advantageous.
