The Work Unit

The Remediation Program is responsible for selecting implementing and overseeing remedial actions and ensuring long-term protectiveness of those actions under various federal and state programs which are consistent with applicable federal and state requirements and are protective of human health and the environment. The Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Program is one such program with the Remediation Program. The UMTRA Program ensures that long-term disposal repositories of uranium mill tailings remain protective; works with the Department of Energy for the ongoing maintenance and operation of disposal cells; ensures that newly discovered tailings are appropriately managed; and provides technical and educational outreach and reports to local governments and private parties so that uranium mill tailings are identified removed stored and disposed of in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and in a manner which is protective of human health and the environment.


What you will be doing

This position acts as a project manager assisting with the implementation of the Colorado uranium mill tailings program and the solid waste permitting program. This position assures adequate storage treatment and disposal of solid waste and uranium mill tailings and assure adequate remediation of contaminated sites by: investigating analyzing and evaluating the geology geophysics hydrogeology and geotechnical aspects of regulated facilities; reviewing technical data; inspecting facilities; overseeing certain activities at facilities; writing and enforcing the recommendations for certificate of designation applications and/or subsequent modifications of the design and operations plans for facilities; and providing technical expertise for the review of engineering plans and designs to ensure that activities are conducted in a technically sound cost-effective timely and protective manner.

An applicant may meet the minimum qualifications for this job in one of two ways: They may qualify through their work experience alone or through a combination of education and work experience.


Experience Only:

Five (5) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to Environmental Earth Sciences Geochemistry or closely related to the work assigned to this position

OR

Education and Experience:

A combination of related education from an accredited institution in Environmental Sciences or a field closely related to the work assignment. and/or relevant experience in an occupation related to long term disposal repositories of uranium or related to the work assigned equal to five (5) years.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

In addition to the minimum requirements the successful candidate in this position will have the following experience:

  • Bachelors or advanced degree in Chemistry/Geology or related field.

  • Familiarity with Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act (UMTRA)

  • Familiarity with Colorado Solid Waste Disposal Sites and Facilities Act as preferred qualifications
  • Experience using a gamma scintillometer
  • The ability to communicate clearly concisely and accurately
  • Exceptional written communication skills
  • Experience in the field conducting environmental sampling.
  • HAZWOPER certification
