Description of Work

This position is located at the North Carolina Division of Services for the Blind (DSB) Career and Training Center in Raleigh NC. The position provides instruction in Career opportunities for adults and teens who are blind visually impaired or deafblind. Many consumers have lost vision and need to attend the DSB Career and Training Center to learn skills that will enable them to become independent at home in their community at work and to improve their quality of life.

Instruction is needed to enable individuals to learn the skills required to find employment aligned with their skill sets and with their current visual status. After the loss of vision a consumer may need to explore new job opportunities and will need assistance with learning how to engage in resume writing job searching and interviewing skills. The careers teacher directly addresses these skills individually developing a plan for each consumer to help them find gainful employment improving their quality of life. Specific teaching assignments will be individualized and change based on the needs of each consumer.


Job Description:
Provide focused instruction aligned with the consumers Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE).
Complete assessments and develop lesson plans for assigned students enrolled in the careers class.
Teach methods for obtaining employment which are applicable to the current job market. Instruct individuals how to utilize assistive technology software packages and computers in order to communicate create e-mail accounts conduct research on the web complete job applications and explore career opportunities aligned with their Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE)
Compose verbal and timely written reports of student progress in the case management system.
Differentiate instructional strategies and content to effectively teach individuals who have recently lost vision as well as to individuals who have been blind deaf-blind or visually impaired for a significant time.
Work collaboratively with Center teachers and staff to assist consumers with achieving their academic or professional goals.
Instruct individuals how to create professional resumes and cover letters.
Teach a curriculum that includes: interview skills soft skills how to get and keep a job when and if someone should disclosure a disability and understanding an individuals rights under the ADA.
The careers teacher will be responsible for participating on the interdisciplinary team which includes assisting during mealtimes attending planning meetings and attending in-service trainings.
The ability to work with students with service animals
Deliver coverage for other classes when needed and execute tasks assigned or requested by management

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Proficient in the use of assistive technologies that support individuals who are visually impaired or deafblind.

  • Extensive experience working with individuals with a wide range of disabilities.

  • Skilled in supporting students as they work toward achieving their individualized employment goals.

  • Possess strong knowledge hands-on experience and effective instructional strategies for teaching specialized skills to teens and adults who are visually impaired blind deafblind and who may have additional disabilities.

    • Masters degree in vocational evaluation rehabilitation counseling or closely related human services field from an appropriately accredited institution; or

    • Bachelors degree in vocational evaluation rehabilitation counseling or a closely related human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience that provides the necessary knowledge skills and abilities; or

    • equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • Must possess a North Carolina Teaching Licensure
