Position Summary:
The RN Surgical Nursing provides comprehensive nursing care to patients recovering from surgical procedures supporting safe healing and timely progression through the postoperative phase of care. This role performs frequent assessments monitors for potential complications manages pain and symptom control and delivers evidence-based nursing interventions tailored to each patients surgical needs. Working collaboratively with surgeons anesthesia providers therapy disciplines and care management teams the RN helps coordinate individualized care plans and supports smooth transitions from surgery to discharge. As part of a supportive team-oriented surgical care environment this position promotes patient understanding of postoperative expectations and safe recovery at home through clear education and patient-centered communication.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform detailed postoperative assessments monitor vital signs and surgical sites and promptly respond to changes in patient condition.
- Administer medications wound care and therapeutic interventions in accordance with clinical standards and evaluate patient responses.
- Coordinate care with surgeons anesthesia teams therapy providers and case management to support effective recovery and discharge planning.
- Maintain accurate documentation of assessments interventions medication administration and patient education within the electronic health record.
- Educate patients and families on postoperative care needs incision care mobility expectations pain management strategies and safety precautions.
- Participate in quality and safety initiatives to enhance surgical patient outcomes and support process improvement within the surgical nursing unit.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Current or temporary RN license in North Dakota or compact RN licensure.
- BLS certification required within orientation period.
- Specialty certification in area of practice is desirable.
Educational Requirements:
- RN program as evidenced by licensure.
- Official diploma or transcript from the school/university from where Degree was received.
Experience Requirements:
- Hospital experience is preferred but not required.
Special Skills or Training Requirements:
- As required by specific units.
Physical Requirements:
The RN Surgical Nursing frequently stands walks bends and assists patients with mobility including transfers repositioning and ambulation. The role involves lifting and moving equipment supporting postoperative mobility and performing moderate physical work with appropriate body mechanics and team assistance. Adequate vision hearing dexterity and communication abilities are essential for monitoring clinical changes performing nursing procedures and ensuring safe patient care.
Environmental Requirements:
This position operates in an acute care surgical recovery environment with exposure to bodily fluids wound care materials disinfectants and medical equipment. The unit includes variable noise levels frequent alarms and fast-paced situations requiring sustained attention and adherence to infection-prevention and safety protocols. Proper use of PPE and compliance with Trinity Health policies are required to maintain a safe environment for patients families and staff.
