Description of Work

Salary Range: $45431 - $79504

This position is an anticipated vacancy available 3/1/26

This position is located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina at Mountain View Correctional Institution in Avery County. Mountain View is a medium custody male facility that houses approximately 908 offenders. We offer a variety of educational classes and programs to promote offender rehabilitation.

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the shift manager in charge of custody for the entire shift operation. This individual will provide overall supervision of Lieutenants and Sergeants. This position has the responsibility to plan and develop procedures and standards to ensure that all policies and procedures are met and maintained in the performance of assigned duties. This position is responsible for directing day to day operations of the areas and personnel under this authority. This individual will need considerable knowledge of inmate custody and program management. A general knowledge of community resources is helpful. This position will report to the Associate Warden of Custody.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Management Preferences:

  • Documented knowledge of Facility Operations.
  • Documented knowledge of Report Writing Skills.
  • Documented knowledge of Prisons Policy and Procedure.
  • Documented knowledge of Supervisory Skills in a Prison Facility.

Necessary Special Qualifications:

Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant or two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
