It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention protection and preparation as well as the care custody and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody healthcare and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration Health Services Rehabilitation & Reentry Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

Reporting to the Diagnostic Director at a multi-custody male correctional facility this position works in the Diagnostic Center and predominantly develops effective treatment plans for offenders. Other duties of this position include but are not limited to the following:

and interpreting legal commitments/documents medical data psychological data criminal history social history statistical information gathered from interviews and written documentation and develop effective treatment plans for offenders including recommendations for housing custody treatment and programming.

and abiding by policy standard operating procedures emergency plans memoranda legal documents and other directives both written and verbal governing daily activities.

routine supportive counseling and crisis intervention functions to include suicide prevention recognizing abnormal behavior and taking appropriate action in accordance with established procedures.

rescue functions during emergencies (i.e. physically removing people from dangerous areas and securing people from confined areas).

effectively with staff offenders and members of the general public in verbal and written form utilizing existing communication systems to convey and/or obtain information instruction and direction.

oneself or another against by violent persons utilizing unarmed self-defense baton or other approved self-defense techniques and devises. And working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become violent and verbally abusive.

continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area to ensure proper security sanitation and safety practices.

effectively and accurately various office machines (i.e. computer typewriters calculators copiers fax machines etc.).

a professional demeanor at all times despite mental and verbal abuse by offenders.


(Salary Range: $39244 - $68679)

Management Preferences

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison:

Central Prison in Raleigh NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations including death row and safe-keepers.


While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings Bible studies or worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution AND one year of experience in testing or interviewing and/or counseling; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
